massive traffic jam near Beijing, spanning more than 60 miles, hit its 10-day mark on Tuesday. With 2,000 cars purchased in China every day and limited road capacity, the country's long-gone era of the Bicycle Kingdom has been replaced by a growing traffic problem. Beijing's road capacity is for 6.7 million vehicles, not enough for the 7 million expected by 2015, according to the head of the Beijing Transportation Research Center. Average driving speeds in Beijing could slow down to 9 miles an hour, state-run media reported. The 10-day-long traffic jam on the Beijing-Zhangjiakou highway started on August 14 after an increase of cargo trucks, mostly carrying coal. The highway connects Beijing to Hebei province and Inner Mongolia. Road maintenance work and vehicles breaking down also contributed to the jam. The Director of Zhangjiakou city's Traffic Management Bureau told the Associated Press that the highway construction that's slowing traffic flow won't be finished until September 17th.
