12 or 13.7 billion light years?

Katie sings in her song 'Nine Million Bycicles' the phrase '... we are 12 billion light years from the edge ...'. Scientist Simon Singh says 13.7 light years are right.

It's actually 46 billion light-years, not 13.8!
-
How cool is that !!
-
Also wrong! That's why:
1) Age of the universe is actually 13.8 billion years not 13.7 (difference is big).
2) That's the age, so the distance is in fact much bigger, because the universe is expanding faster than the speed of light (dark energy).
3) The distance is measured from the center (the Big Bang point) and we are not in this place. Our galaxy and our planet is however in the center of 'Observable Universe', whose the edge is about 14.3 billion parsecs (or 46.6 billion light years).
4. By saying "That's a guess" Katie Melua meant her own prediction and she clearly realized that it could be wrong, so she sang "No one can ever sad it's true".
5. It's a fucking love song! Lyrical subject does not have to be familiar with the laws of physics ;-) -
Does any1 knows where is the 13.7 version? =)
-
Actually 13.7 billion LY is incorrect as well.
If you add in the expansion that has happened since those photons were emitted the observable universe is closer to 46 billion LY away. -
A musician does not care about facts. A musician cares about tune and poetry. A musician cares about meter/rhythm.
To make fuss about this is to show how little you know about poetry and music. The singer's response to the sorry nerd, therefore, is the delicate equivalent of using the f-word. -
Vaclav is correct. Light can only travel at a set speed through space but that doesn't preclude light travelling with space as it expands. He's right. You need to go and read up about inflation theory.
-
Not at some point. Still is. Far away celestial objects have a relational speed faster than speed of light. This is due to the fact, that not objects are moving, but the fabric of space is expanding. Thus object themselves are not moving faster than light, so they are not breaking physics or anything. The only problem with this is that we will never get any information from these stars and planets, because no light will be able to reach us from them. Ever.

Read something about the Inflation theory. E.g., "Inflation_(cosmology)" on Wikipedia.
-
Really? You have evidence for this?
-
The Universe has at some point expanded faster than light could travel.

Jane. ;)

"Observeble universe"

Well, quantum tunneling is FTL, but arguably it doesn't break Einstein relativity.
-
Wrong...nothing travels faster than light. That's the natural laws of physics Einstein.
-
Though it might seem a retorical question, I'll answer it as simple as possible. The universe is expanding ever outwards at the speed of light (300 000km/s), sometimes even faster, which makes it impossible to ever reach the edge. A bullet fired in space will, unless crashing into another galaxy (which is very likely), float forever outwards
-
there is NOOOOOOOO EDDDDDDDDDGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
-
You can't see the edge because the edge is expanding faster then light ;)
-
Alright, that could be a start. But... is not worthy you know? I really don't wish for you any better nor improvement. Oh! and I said I don't want you any closer, so keep studying engineering (big deal) and your cheap sarcasm there. That's just fine. And, it's a good thing that you yourself included in the general of the stupid ppl! Very honest, admirable. Have a wonderful day so we can keep laughing.

HOLY CRAP YOU'RE RIGHT! We are just plain stupid. I never thought of it that way before. Thank you for making me realize that. You know I feel much happier knowing the USA's reason for stupidity. All because of you darlig1218. You're a real pal! I'm gonna stop going for my engineering degree, because that is just USA crap. I think I'll move to England and learn engineering there. That way, I won't be stupid anymore. I can finally make darlig1218 proud of me, who apparently knows everything!
