A Sunday in Hell (1976)

The film follows the French Paris-Roubaix spring classic, notorious for the hellish paves or cobbled roads of the north "which are no longer used for traffic but only for transporting cattle - and for cycle races". We are there from the dawn preparations and rituals on the outskirts of Paris and through the rigours of the race with special focus on a number of prominent cyclists to the final outcome on the Roubaix cycle track - followed by the filthy riders taking their showers. There is also an eye for life among the spectators and the media event as such. The film alternates among different kinds of shot with a view to establishing the most suitable view of the narrative: shots from motorcycles, which are able to convey the motion of the race and provide close ups of the riders in the style of television cycle race reporting; fixed cameras stationed at strategically important points along the route, where viewers can watch riders passing in real time and thus gain a clear overview of the distance between the leaders and the main field: and the Olympian eye of the helicopter shots.

seeing how picky that one guy is about his bike, lol reminded me when i was a kid i could ride anything- no brakes, no gears, broken seat, skipping chain, rusty, muddy, taco wheels, but the handle bars had to be exactly 90 degrees to the wheel, i'd spend forever sometimes getting it right- just for riding around lol

interesting how many cars they used in the past. I always thought,it´s a problem of our days. But it seemst to be as old as professional cycling. They are just to much in the focus of the media.

Eddy Merckx adjusting his saddle probably finalising a deal to ride for Roger de Vlaeminck more like

David Sunderland did and amazing job, I love his voice! Sadly, he's not with us anymore.

It seems pretty amazing that by 1976 men had gone and walked on the moon but road cycling was still on the crude side. Look at the bikes and equipment, the kit apparel and no helmets, it seems that it took a long time to make the innovations we see today in the cycling world. In a way it was almost more pure back then.

It's amazing how well behaved the spectators are compared to the dickheads you see today.

Balls of Steel - in the truest sense!!

A lot of carisma is lost in this english version without the original narrator Jørgen Leth....a cykling encyklopedia. But then again - not many would understand it in danish right ;)
-
The english voice is ok, but to get the TRUE feeling and sense of drame for this race and the documentary itself, no one does it better than Jørgen Leth from Denmark, the guy producing the film.

These guys are biking on some bad roads. They should find some good ones. And some helmets. And some EPO, HGH, steroids, amphetamines . . .

this is awesome :)

Fantastic portrayal & observation of events, could have been written by Ernest Hemingway!

Looks like Aldo gios in the beginning cleaning Mosers bike
-
I remember first watching this as a naive teenage racing cyclist in the mid 90's, convinced I would one day ride this race. Reality bit, but to live is to dream.
