Great job, Peter! Solid review & info. I love my ST2 but the ST2 S changes nearly cover everything.
The ST2 S headlight - My ST2 light is a good light, but for those 21 mile evening commutes, in the winter & dark, I added a 2nd light for optimal coverage. This ST2 S light easily takes care of that need and then some.
ST2 S single front chain ring - I NEVER use the inner chain ring on my ST2 and would much prefer the efficiency and weight of a single chain ring like on the ST2 S.
ST2 S electric shifting - In the past, I would have considered this unessary overkill. However, I'm about to hit 4k commuting miles on my ST2, after 5 months of having it and I can see it helping. When I come to the many stops on my commute, I shift to various gears, depending on the grade of the road, to keep my knees happy and be efficient. So, I'm always counting clicks and end up having to move my leg and look back to see what gear I'm in, taking my eyes off the road. Seeing the gear on the handlebar display would be sweet! Also, as you said, the lack of cables is great, since cables stretch over time and need adjusted and replaced.
The ST2 S battery - I have no complaints over my long-range ST2 battery, but would welcome this one @20% larger. On max assist, this would take care of any concern of my 42 mile daily commute, if I were to not charge at work. Also, when my ST2 battery dips below 50% and especially below 40% and 30%, on windy days, I notice the power drop a little, reducing my speed by 1-2 mph at the same effort. This would likely eliminate this.
Although, I love the black, stealthy ST2 look/color over the new ST2 S ;) -
Do you think a mid drive or rear hub motor is a better ebike solution and why?
