On this modern roundabout in the centre of Amsterdam cyclists have priority over motor traffic (as is usual in the Netherlands). People on bicycles are protected on the separated circular cycle tracks all round the roundabout. All types of traffic flow very smoothly. +yamaone I think that institute took a look at German cycle paths, not Dutch ones. Cycle tracks are not inherently safer or dangerous. The details make them safer or dangerous. Having complete cycle paths, even through junctions, roundabouts, traffic lights, adequate width, separation from pedestrians when they number too many, and clear sightlines and if possible, some width between the cycle track crossings and the roadway makes turning conflicts easier. And most Dutch pathways in urban areas are unidirectional, which makes them safer. But of course if you design a pathway to be bi-directional accounting for their special needs, like the Dutch do when they do in fact build bidirectional paths, which many German paths in urban areas are, then they can be a lot safer. Like extra width between path and roadway, signs and possibly flashing lights, and wider cycle paths, and even raised crossings can make their dangers lessened. And you are rarely ever hurt in the Netherlands, let alone killed. And even if you do get hurt, it is usually a scrape or a small gash, and you will usually heal just fine. And when someone does get hurt, and especially killed, in the Netherlands on the roads, it is talked a lot about in the news, in ordinary conversations, traffic experts are brought in to asses the safety, and a big report is done. And the driver who is usually the one at fault is taken into custody and if the police believe the driver did behave incorrectly, they will charge him/her. What are the rules regarding mopeds? I have found them quite aggressive within bike lanes when visiting Amsterdam.

A huge part of this is culture - IIRC pedestrians aren't even allowed to cross German roads except at specific controlled times and places. Very rule-bound. This is a trusting and trustworthy community where each respects the other's safety, and priority is negotiated - signalling, braking and eye-contact. OTOH note that 6 or 7 cyclists are phoning or texting (while moving) or riding one-handed - confident. Consistency would help - motorists and cyclists who are timid or aggressive stand out.

No - I would say >1.5m clearances. 1:36 Cyclist is very fast (30 ° lean at first turn) and not signalling - confidence says "Don't worry - I'm fine" - he chooses to get close. 1:42 cyclist is looking left, suddenly sees car in front brake, so he brakes hard. All for no reason. 1:44+1:48 no 2:20 negotiation is a few seconds before impact. Bike 2 will see 1 braking. There's probably a 'Don't overtake at a junction' rule ? 1:57 Don't trust "Looking will make them stop". Needs more dragon teeth !

Interesting. The most important feature of its success is _flow_ ! No-one goes very fast, but then people rarely have to stop. It would be interesting to suddenly swap a UK roundabout in NL for this one into the UK. I'm pretty sure it would be regarded as an unethical experiment, as UK drivers are likely to cause carnage. (those that think paying pollution tax means they own the roads) It does rely on them respecting cyclists safety - not yet OK in the UK. More space would help safe merging ?

Hey Markenlei, you should have a drone which you could hover above the roundabout. That would be awsome. If I had a drone I would gladly lend it out, but unfortunately I don't :(

I see not a single near accident, take 1:36 for example, the cyclist sees the car coming, holds in just a tiny little bit, and crosses behind the car

You miss the point of this design. This isn't about following rules, people are generally very bad at that. This is about human interaction. What you perceive as near accidents were simply well calculated passes in front or just behind other traffic users. The junction was a black spot before, but not anymore. This has proven to be safer.
