@Michael Lantz: by having a date who also owns a bicycle? ;) In all seriousness though, people do own and use cars here and use them for longer commutes and recreational journeys just like you do over there. It's just that everyone, including those who can't afford a car or are too young to drive, has a bicycle, at least in the Netherlands. Cycling is cheap and is often the most efficient option for short trips, like to and from city centers, schools or your date's house, so cars just aren't as necessary as in the US.

Being an American,How do you get dates and Jobs in The Netherlands,Sweden and other Western European countries by just by having a bike?If you don't have a car in America you are screwed out of both.That is the main reason why a car is a need in America.

there are no bike test here in the netherlands, it is as easy as buying a murderweapon in texas..anybody can get a bike and drive it..

Hahha I live in holland I have never heard of 'bike day' and ik never did the 'bike test' everyone is texting and listening to music while they are cycling, it's a huge chaos but i like it :)

All very well with `cycle` countries , but in most (emerging) economies if you, adult, don´t own a car , you r considered poor. Or try to get a date in the USA, Brazil, Argentina or Spain.. and tell the chick ´I don´t own a car, I have a bicycle`, she ´d laugh or smack ur face. In the S.21 no one mentally sane wd want to cycle to work, backpack loaded, sweating the heck or with snow Truth is, those countries are ok, but not as rich as they say they are.

I don't get it why this should turn into a 'bash America' thing. It's about cycling. Apparently it's an emotional subject. And Roger: Yes, our country is flat and close-knit, but people cycle in Switzerland, and cycle a lot less in New York which is also flat and a lot more densely populated. It's not about who's better, it's about deciding to make the choice for cycling or not. Build it right and people will come. It's expensive, but cheaper than not building it.
