Does a better set of wheels offer the biggest gain in bike performance? Click here to subscribe to GCN: http://gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN When it comes to upgrading, most people will tell you to improve your wheelset, Generally you can expect a sizeable decrease in weight and potential aerodynamic gains. These gains come at a cost though - aside maybe investing in a power meter or changing your bike altogether, wheels will usually be the most expensive upgrade you can make. But in terms of other upgrades like tyres, groupsets or other component, how does a shiny new set of wheels match up? Well, we took to the road to find out. There is so much waffle about how carbon is so much better, I own both types and find there is virtually zero difference except expense.

Thanks for the review! Very informative! with a great quality...

Triple chain ring, hell no.
Aerodynamics is a love hate relationship. You will suffer on high side winds, I know it from riders who grunt and complain when getting pushed around. And the same is true with flat spokes. It may seem minimal conflict, the push is there when hit by left or right winds. Larger surface area, it can be enough to the point of losing control, if you relax your arms and get banged around with sudden gusts of wind. -
If im paying $1000+ on a bike i better love that thing, that means feel and looks. Aesthetics matter to me!

What SCOTT is that?

What about swapping all bearings out for ceramics?
-
It seems pretty obvious the helmet should have much more aerodynamic effect than the rim shape ?

1:03 great job showing the weight of the Reynolds set

Nice....100% agree.

I like some of the music in these, could you post a track list?

These are grand at handling knocks
and ride on shaky dirt trails. Slower than the greater part of road bikes,
these work productively on Chinese
carbon wheelset. CSC suggests added safety measures for holders of mountain
bikes. Owners are needed to be vigilant if leave their bicycles for a longer
time. -
Soundtrack @ 1:32 please.

If you shaved, pee'd and dumped b4 youll save alot of weight

Am I correct in asuming there is a lot of Cycle snobery? You know, just like having the best set of golf clubs at the country club. The looks I get from lycra clad blokes when they pass me on my old peugeot bike with shifters on the down tube. Noses in the air. The average biker always give a nod.

After watching and reading on carbon wheels I'm concerned with rim failure and blow outs? Also the impact on braking? As a heaver rider 205lbs is carbon a good option? Also are Novatec R5 good? Sorry loads of questions. Keep up the good work on this channel :)

Great video. thanks!

Brilliant! Fun as always and quite true including the part regarding aesthetics. A cool looking bike is not only fun to ride but one is more encouraged to ride it faster as well. Cheers!

I definitely agree that deep section wheels will help on performance. I mean just getting a bike that you think is good looking and nice to ride will help motivate you to get out on it more thereby making you better. I currently have dura-ace c24 9000 wheels on and I mean they are an amazing training wheelset but I can't help looking up wheels like reynolds 66 and zipp 404 because a roughly 6 cm rim just looks so damn good on a bike and the 2-300g I would gain in weight is not something I can't lose by getting in better shape so currently that would be the dream to get!

My experience has been there is a point at which upgrades are a waste of money. That's when you are upgrading a bike that is no longer "standard" and the parts are increasingly difficult to find. It is at that point you should consider replacement. By that I mean you should replace the entire bike.
