The large majority of Dutch children cycle to school. This is how they arrive at a school's bicycle parking facility in 's-Hertogenbosch (aka Den Bosch) in the Netherlands. There is nothing special about this school. All over the Netherlands schools look like this between 8 and 8.30 in the morning. here in the United States for example when I go by one particular school (in a residential neighborhood) in the afternoon and classes are letting out, there are 50 or 60 cars lined up for a couple blocks waiting to pick kids up in addition to the buses.

Bike to work day should be everyday..... employers needs to provide places to park and lock bicycles and encourage employees to ride a bicycle to work. Children should be riding a bike to school instead of being dropped off by their parents. Cities need to do more to provide safe walking and biking trails and paths that connect homes, schools and businesses. Speak up and ask for more bicycle paths in your community.

There use to be bike racks at the schools in the 60's and 70's in the U.S. and I rode my bike everywhere and still do. Now kids ride the bus and are fat. Just like there parents.

This is such a normal and common thing for me. I have difficulties accepting that this isn't normal for everyone.I once had a German girl at my place for a week, for school. I asked her if she owned a bicycle. She however never used it.When I visited her for a week in Germany we walked everywhere or went with car. (Mostly car, I really needed to adjust to that.) Everything was made out of hills, I could never see a straight line anywhere. So when she came to my place we moved around on bicycle everywhere. When she saw my school and all the bicycles parked there she just looked at me with big eyes.She had apparently never seen so much bikes in her life. I couldn't help but laugh, as I go to a very small school.I had a great week with her, it was very educational.

If it was like this in the UK, cycling would be much better. More Ile lanes would be introduced and it would be an overall better experience
