It al1l comes down to speed and lightweight materials and components as well as aerodynamics. Racers are willing to pay thousands of dollar for the lightest bike they can afford. This includes the frame, wheel sets, and drive train components. Titanium and carbon fiber are the materials of choice in this sport. That being said, to save money, a beginner could get an entry-level model new or used with heavier material for less. But, still, with today's technology, with graphite frames and hybrid metal parts, it's still quite light. An entry level tri bike for beginners doesn't have to be anything too expensive. Get an older used model that's a bit heavier and feel what it's like. The geometry of the bikes are totally different from road bikes. The top tube is angled more aggressively for better wind resistance. This is especially true when riders are in the aero position clutching the aero bars. Getting use to being in that position for prolonged periods is the most important thing a beginner needs to train doing. Then, after that, and a couple of races, you'll have a better idea of why or what things you need in your next triathlon bicycle when you upgrade. Some people that are starting out wonder how to convert their road bike into one for triathlon. It's not as simple as attaching tri aero bars to the handle bars. In reality, you will never get the same effect because of the different design architecture of the frame geometry. Road bikes are made to go long and be comfortable at the same time. The best tri bikes are made to go fast at varying distances. But, for many just starting out, a road bike should do just fine while you figure out if the sport is for you. Of course, if you really want to compete and get an edge on the competition, the bike stage is the place where the most time can be made up. Some other brands to consider that make tri-specific cycling gear including bikes are names like Orbea, DeSoto, Fuji, Kestrel, Scott, Kuota and Quintana Roo. Some of these companies are known primarily for their triathlon cycling equipment. Others make high-end road bikes and time trial bicycles. Either way, going with any of these trusted companies will put you on par with the competition. Triathletes range from amateurs to pros like those competing in Ironman and the Olympics. At these competitions, you'll see many of the top competitors riding the same top triathlon bikes in the bike stage. But, not everyone can afford them. For those just starting out in the sport, looking for used tri bikes for sale for beginners is the way to go to test out triathlon without spending too much money.
