The offending driver, a juvenile, attempted to pass a bus on the left and struck a bicyclist from behind. As the driver fled the scene, the bus driver blocked the bridge to prevent the person from fleeing. Another citizen also blocked the offending car's path. The driver was taken into custody and charged with multiple offenses, including Pennsylania's latest law to protect cyclists that went into effect on this day. The lanes on the north bound side of the Fahy Bridge are each 10 feet in width. The lanes were reduced in size due to structural problems with the existing walkway. PennDOT created a secondary walkway and bicycles are not permitted to use this area. The cyclist was in the proper lane position due to the lane width. In a narrow lane, the cyclist is permitted, and is actually safer, by taking the entire lane. A motorist has plenty of room to pass the cyclist in the left lane. Had the cyclist been in the right portion of the lane and been struck by the car, he would most likely have suffered far worse injuries because of being pushed into the concrete barrier. Before you make insensitive comments, regardless of how you personally feel about the right of cyclists to use the roadway, remember that it is another human being and no one deserves to be struck by a car and left in the roadway.

Hey BPD, Bikes don't move as fast as cars, this is your fault. Make lanes for bikes and stop forcing them to ride in "full metal jacket" lanes.

Very stupid and dangerous to ride on bike on road, speed difference between car and bike is too big. In finland in almost all places bicycle paths along roads and riding on bike on road is forbidden.

I hope that retard got cited for riding on the busy road instead of the sidewalk. I ride my bike everywhere too, and am smart enough to MOVE THE FUCK OVER. You will not win against a car. Many drivers are fucking stupid, and will run you over. Either move the fuck over, or ride on the sidewalk. Who cares if there is a sign saying you may use the whole lane?

The most astonishing thing about this entire video is that it was posted by a police department and they say the bicyclist may use the full lane. My experience with PD is: Without an explanation of how its supposed to happen, bicyclists should never be where car traffic may be, this would be considered obstructing traffic. I wonder what is going on at the Bethlehem PD as far as bikes? I mean they have it right as far as bike safety goes here. Is the chief a big fan of track bike racing? I think it's mostly political so, this video will probably be taken down once a certain person on the force retires.
Also, is this bridge still in the same configuration? Has the lane setup been changed? -
