Bicycle Touring Off Road Equipment Tips

Equipment Tips for Off Road Bicycle Camping & Touring. Using a mountain bike to transport camping equipment, I never use panniers. On a dirt road, a mountain bike can be used as an all terrain trolley. This is a very effective alternative to carrying all your camping gear on your back. It will be obvious to any cyclist that regular pedalling is not really possible with that much gear attached to the bike frame. But with Off Road biking in very mountainous areas more time is spent walking alongside the bike as you push it up hill, once you reach the top of a hill you then sit on the bike and quickly roll down the other side. With this technique pedalling is almost unnecessary. When using this Off road bicycle system to carry the weight of your gear, it is easily possible to travel 3 times the distance that you would normally travel with all your gear in backpacks. There is also a lot less strain on your legs and back without the heavier backpack. But I must warn that one should be quite experienced with bicycles to safely tackle off road mountain trails with weight attached to the bike. Also it is important to have a bike that is suitable, quality disc brakes and frontal suspension are recommended. I regularly service my bike to keep it in top working order for such trekking. I hope to do more videos on this topic and recommend that you watch our other mountain bike videos in the links :) Happy camping !!! SPINY CRAYFISH Soon we will have more videos regarding the many fantastic species of Euastacus Spiny Crayfish found in the foothills of Victoria's mountains. After further research we have concluded that the spiny crayfish in the video is Euastacus yarraensis or Yarra River Spiny Crayfish. This species is not considered "critically endangered" but there are heavy restrictions on fishing them as their existence is under threat from over fishing. Stick around cause we hope to catch many more Euastacus spiny crayfish this summer !!! Good idea for transport gear. What is your reasoning for not using panniers?

If your girlfriend doesn't ride a bike well, maybe a set of foot pegs on the rear axle might be the trick for the easier descents. She can stand on the pegs and hold on to you

You seem to be very handy when it comes to making things work for you. I was thinking that if you cut some heavier plastic you could make a shield for the tent and other gear you carry towards the back of the bike where it gets hit by stuff kicked up from the rear tire. You could start out cutting up a used 2 liter until you found a design that worked for you then use that then cut out a heavier gauge one out of a old plastic cutting board with the appropriate holes to attach to the frame. I've seen guys use the old 2 liters to make a fender to keep their back from getting wet or dirty. I thought the same principle should work for your gear. God bless and stay safe.
