Bicycles are a vehicle for social change | Dave Cieslewicz | TEDxMadison
bicycles reviews | bicycles videos | bicycles online
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Dave is an avid cyclist, both for recreational and practical purposes, but he recognizes the historical importance of the bicycle far beyond its basic functionality, as a vehicle for social change. His talk shows the role of the bicycle throughout history and how its emergence has impacted various disadvantaged social groups, and continues to have impact today. Executive Director of Wisconsin Bike Fed and former mayor of Madison About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Just for clarification, several countries such as the Netherlands or Norway require helmet by law, saying that "they don't wear helmets in Europe" is simply not true.

where do people keep getting stats like 8 grand a year to run a car? I think i spent maybe $1000 last year and that was after a huge 1000 mile plus car trip. And my bike costs maybe $50 a year, and a third of that wasn't even necessary (i change my lines every time i replace my tires). It'd just be nice to see where they keep getting their stats, cause unless we're showing numbers from ferraris or a new 105 i don't believe that $8000 or $300 number by about 90%.

Great sense of built in situational humor. I particularly can associate with the "interested but concerned" group and like the "If you build it they will come" thinking and data to support. Thanks so much. I enjoyed your talk!
