Hi Funnzie. What do you think of the trek Marlin mountain bikes?
-
funnzie, you sure do push the BD way to go and I have no problem with that. However, these bikes are not for the serious MTB rider. You do get what you pay for. I have owned bikes with the components this bike comes with and found them to be very lacking. The Suntour forks are cheap and handle poorly in hard riding. The same for the Acera drivetrain. I have worn out the forks and drivetrain like these in as few as 500 miles of hard riding. For the casual rider, these are a very good value.

Great common sense advice in your videos...thanks, it's appreciated.

Excellent review, thanks for being thorough and keep up the great work.

If I may ask. I am 57 avg shape and live in Cebu Philippines. From the Bay Area California.
I have a DiamondBack recoil 29 but since moving here I do about 90% of my riding on road some 100 kilometer rides some roads being as bad as mountain trails. Now the 10% of off roading I do is about 2% beaches and 8% mountain riding as bad as anything you will find in the bay area.
What recommendations would you have for upgrades to my MTB
Thank you (Salamat) -
I purchased a barely used Cliff 4300 a year ago for $125 (pretty much stole it). I'm a mountain bike newbie. I spent the days of my youth trail riding bmx bikes. I appreciate the honesty of your review and the tips given. I definitely don't want to snap a crank while riding, so that's helpful. I haven't had this on trails yet, just used as a commuter so far (your tip on tires was also helpful). I can't wait to hit the Arkansas trails with the Cliff though.

A $350 dollar bike cannot be expected to endure 10 foot jumps. You will need a heavaly gussetted frame designed for freeriding with full suspension. and the stongest wheels you can find.

Hello, great review, you got me researching on Windsor bikes, and i found one pretty easily. I need a new bike for the upcoming season for mountain biking. I was just wondering if you knew how it handled on fast downhills, and maybe around 10 foot jumps or so, because i wont be going over anything much bigger most likely. Thanks

Thank you. The bike world needs to understand the difference between three divisions of riding; 1. recreation/fitness 2. racing 3. professional racing. Your purchase should reflect the division you ride. The first group should be spending no more than $500 the second group $1300 and the third don't buy their own bikes. A bicycle is a VERY simple machine, it is the hype that costs the remaining 70% of the purchase.

So buy the frame size you want, then fit whatever aerobar to it that works. Most aerobars have the rest pad behind the handlebars, which means for some riding styles when standing, your knees could hit the pads. Ride the bike for a while, get your fine tuned adjustments in place then see if you need flip up bars. You will need a flat bar without a riser curve to mount aerobars. So the handlebars that come with the bike cannot be used. It would be a wise investment to buy the FSX 2 instead.

The larger frame size was personal preference, I wanted to be in a more upright position on the aero bars, and farther behind the crankset than on my other bikes, I like to be in different positions on my bikes. My Motobecane Adventure bike (29r Mountain bike) is a smaller frame than I usually ride, with flip up aero bars. I found placing riser stems on road bikes has adverse effects on the handling, so a larger frame was the option. Riser stems on mountain bikes are not a problem..

I am interested in a gravity fsx 1 mountain bike. i like it because it has disc brakes. i would like to put a set of aero bars on it. i know you stated to get a larger size frame for road bikes. would i have to do the same for a mountain bike. i know i could get flip up profiles for around 60 dollars. i just happen to find 2 different set of mounted aeros without flip up option for 22-26 dollars. thanks for your reviews and kind responses.!!

Yea, as long as I remain a starving artist I may never be able to afford or try hydraulic brakes. Could be after using mechanicals on 10 mile downhills my hand strength is so developed I would never need hydraulics.
