Bikes in Holland - TravelMovies

People sometimes say that the Dutch are born on their bikes! Fact is, Holland is a perfect country for cycling, and counts more bicycles than people. Be a part of the Dutch cycling culture and rent a bike. Bikes can be rented in the centers of the various big cities, from train stations and from some hotels. The Dutch like a variety of bikes, ranging from regular men's and women's bikes to carrier bikes and reclining bikes. The fact that the land is so flat, the mild climate, the short distances and the wonderful infrastructure make biking in Holland not just practical, but great fun as well. So if you want to see more of Holland, one of the best ways to do it is by bike.

I love bikes. I even carry a bike in the back of my van. I park on the outskirts of Amsterdam and continue on my two wheels into the city.

Some cities encourage bikes.......... they provide safe walking and biking lanes and trails. Cities also encourage businesses and apartments to provide safe places to lock or store a bicycle. Encourage your elected officials to do more. Speak up.. become an advocate for bicycle use in your city.

God love the Dutch. I think an airplane ticket to Amsterdam would be worth it just to spend a few days cycling in that gorgeous city, and then heading out into the countryside among the tulips...

During that time the two provinces were still one province, called Holland.

Thank you so much for the clarification.

Because most of the country is land reclaimed from the sea (and actually lies beneath the sea level) it's called The "Netherlands" (meaning "the lands beneath the sea")

Within The Netherlands we've got 12 provinces, two of the coastal provinces are called North- and South Holland. During the colonial age many of our ships sailed from harbors (like Amsterdam and Rotterdam) within these two 'Hollands'. By doing so they also spread the names of these provinces around the world. Today's official name came only after the occupation by Napoleon in 1813. Before that we were known as "The Republic of the Seven United Provinces" after our war of independence from Spain.

I believe the the correct term is The Netherlands. When the Dutch speak about their country it is always Netherlands. It may have been shortend so English speakers can pronounce it.
