Biking in NYC - 8th and 9th Ave - Protected Bike Lanes
bicycles reviews | bicycles videos | bicycles online
In this video I ride from West Village Manhattan to Midtown and back. I specifically choose this route to showcase the great protected bike lanes which exist on the west side of the city on 8th and 9th Ave. For the most part I felt very safe riding in these bike lanes. I used my Contour Roam 2 camera to shoot the action footage and recorded the audio with my Panasonic voice recorder and earpiece microphone. I tracked the speed and heart rate using my Garmin eTrex 30 GPS, and wrote a basic program in Turing to refresh the numbers on the screen for displaying it. New York City is a great bicycling city! I encourage you to explore the city on a bike if you ever visit. Please leave a comment and SUBSCRIBE. Thanks for watching!

I really enjoyed your Biking in NYC video series. It would be awesome if you came back to NYC and recorded using an HD 360 spherical camera. That way viewers could get an immersive (virtual reality) experience using Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear VR, HTC Vive, or Google Cardboard via Youtube or Facebook. Thanks!

Those lanes are only protected in the minds of politicians who allowed that to be built. The reality is, at most they are buffered bike lanes. There is a lot of paint there, a few curbs at intersections but not much else. Paint won't protect you from much. A true protected bike line has a curb the entire length. Plus...you can still be left or right hooked quite easily. it's better than nothing..but not much.

Oh! I didn't know that NYC had a few protected bike lanes like these on the streets; I like them a lot better than the sharrow lanes: more safer. Thanks for showing these long videos from NYC and the Netherlands.

Thanks CJ, I've really enjoyed the NYC videos. You apologized for the camera shaking, but I am amazed how steady it is and how little rattle and vibration is picked up on the sound track. The mike really works well for that. Now for some summer riding videos in Toronto, maybe along the lake?

Great videos Christopher. Got a question, since you live in Toronto, and you were visiting NYC. Would you consider owning a fixie? I mean they are abundant in NY, and Toronto is not that hilly, or Do you prefer your green bike overall? Anyways thanks for sharing your videos, keep on riding!
