How to brighten up and save a rusty steel racer without spending much money. Make sure you're in a well ventilated room or even better outdoors. Mask and gloves recommended, I just can't be bothered sometimes.

You should look into molasses for rust removal. Soak your parts in a tub of diluted molasses for 1-2 weeks. It will get every bit of it off. Even the impossible to reach areas. There are lots of you tube videos demonstrating it. I don't think it effects paint.
