I really like my specialized tricross (which they don't make any more). My biggest gripe is the breaks. I have the cantilever break option and they SUCK!!! But, who needs to stop anyway. They made a disc option though. It has mounts for the front and rear racks. I use it as a commuter and as a weekend paved trail rider. I have yet to load it up for a tour, but next summer for sure. I live in WI so touring now is not an option. 2400 miles on it and just replaced the chain and rear cassette. Still have the original tires.

2 years ago I bought a 'non branded' frame online for 1/3 to 1/4 retail of a branded bike and put the bike together myself, saved me a fortune and I get compliments on the bike constantly.
I also just purchased Ortleib's Back Roller Classic panniers for just $126 total (you can find a deal if you do enough searching - they usually sell for $180 and go up to $220)... can't wait to start using them!
Also try jet.com for great prices on many items, just be careful and do your searching before going to jet...
aawyeah.com also has great prices and always FREE shipping (just got a new Cane Creek headset $13 cheaper than anyone else w/ Free shipping - and w/ no min. purchase for the Free shipping)!
