Bypassing Throttle Safety Switch and kill switch for testing
bicycles reviews | bicycles videos | bicycles online
This is a how-to for 1990's Arctic Cats on how to bypass the kill, TSS (Throttle safety switch) which go bad quite frequently and bypass the wiring harness and wire your key directly to the stator ground. I cover how to bypass a closed ignition loop system (up to 1997) and an open loop system (up to 2002 for sure). Watch, learn and ask questions. Even if your sled doesn't need this mod right now, it will in the future. This test allows you to pinpoint your issue, You can fix the TSS or kill switch to make either/both of them funcitonal again.

I just bought 1993 580z. went to ride today no spark changed plugs still nothing cannot figure out bypass but connect wire tested to Threeway n a ground starts right up what do I do there

would you get the same result if you cut the tss wire above the three wire pigtail then spliced it back to the ks wire leading to the common on the pig tail.( the pigtail coming from towards the throttle side not from the harness side)(if that makes sense) i believe the harness side has 4 or 5 wires whereas the bar side has 3. anyway. the reason i ask is i want to update my kill switch to the newer skidoo style switch which happens to be two wires however i need to bypass my tss. in order to make this work. in addition i believe my current problems are relates to the tss. i rebuilt the carbs, new boots, new exhaust gaskets, etc etc sled fired 3rd pull, then first ever since primed during the first start.(have started it a hand full of times since work) after the carb job revved ok and seemed to have response. i then started changing the throttle to a skidoo style throttle(my bars are smaller than normal as I'm a small guy and the bulky ac style throttle assembly was taking up all my room. anyway back to it after the throttle change i fired the sled, it idles great, starts first pull as always. just cuts out if you hit the throttle. the sled will continue to idle if you let go of the throttle before it boggles out. checked choke plungers, checked plugs not the plungers not the plugs. got spark cuz she idles oh so nice. must be the tss. its not a coincidence i believe that the problem arose after the throttle change (i have had the toss switch vacant since the throttle change so) so back to my original question three wires into two ( my machine is violet to the common black for tss and brown for other side of ks connection. will things work out if i splice toss (black) and ks common (violet) above the pig tail and still have full use of ks.
SO SO sorry for the massive message -
Hey gotta question for you. I'm trying to figure out where I can wire in a cooling fan in a 1991 Jag 440, I swapped the air cooled 440 out and stuck a L/C 530 in there. I'm using a radiator and fan from a little Vespa scooter. (I know...) I cant seem to find sufficient power anywhere on the harness. Would it be that the fan runs on D/C power and the stator puts out A/C? This sled's wiring is a hectic mess at best and I've tried everything. Hoping all this wasn't for nothing. Any ideas/.

Hi Blaine, great vid but I have a question. I have a 1999 jag and the tss is bothering so after watching your vid I went and looked at it but the jag only has a 2 prong connector, I unplugged it and it fixed the problem but the kill switch doesn't work now. My question is this, is there a way to wire it so just the kill switch works? Just for peace of mind when my kids are riding it. Thanks

Logan'
, i bet it's TSS. Mine did that... -
hi I have a question I got a 2000 zl 500 efi and it starts up fine but will bogg every once and a while while driving and many different speeds do you think its the TSS or just dirty injectors

There is a problem with my 1996 Arctic Cat 580 EXT, the kill switch is busted but it broke in the off position. So if I bypass it will that fix the problem?
-
wht if my 97 articat has electronic fuel injection can I still bypass?

My 86 cougar will run great 12-15 mins then tt will bog down and start to die could you diagnose my problem also i started running it with 1/2 can of sea foam per tanks it seemed to have fixed my problem that was in about 25 degree weather now were back down to the -5 area and it started having my original problem again

will this work on a 1986 cougar????

Hi so i have a 1990 prowler 440 runs awesome but last weekend on a long ride i started it back up and i stopped to cross a road and when i let off the throttle completely it kick it and out then shut off as if the kill switch was played with i was confused and it started up and worked and it kept doing that every once in a while is that the tts acting up ? When i just slightly hold the throttle at idle it stops acting up and idles great i let up and it kicks in and out of spark . I hope someone can tell me if this is my problem

It worked for my 1978 panther you just have to locate it on those older ones
-
I just picked up a 93 cougar 440 L/C
it starts 1st pull everytime but after shutting off the choke it will only idle for 15-20 seconds then die unless I keep working the throttle and keep it running
I can ride it all over without a problem but if I let off the throttle to let it idle it eventually dies could it be the TSS? -
Hi Blaine, Your videos are very helpful to many of us out here. Thanks ! I have a question or you. I'm working on a 1999 arctic cat ZRT 600 and want to hook up a tether switch with out bypassing the kill or throttle safety switch. How easy is it and how is it done ?
Thanks Blaine -
I am not sure how the 80 Pantera is wired....but if it does have a TSS system on it...then yes it would work on this model too.
