View Description for more details. Carbon fiber bike frame repair for under $30. THUMBS UP if this was helpful in any small way: ) This video shows how I repaired my Specialized S-Works Tarmac cracked frame. Total work time involved? Around 3 hours (not counting re-assembly). Most of the time will be spent sanding. I hope you have a power sander... In many cases, a broken carbon frame is repairable. My cracked carbon road bike frame had a soft spot in the top tube that flexed when pressed. Clearly it had been dinged by a previous owner. It seemed like a perfect candidate to undergo a do it yourself carbon frame repair. I bought a carbon fiber repair kit on ebay that consisted of a roll of carbon fiber cloth, epoxy, hardener, and instructions. The kit was $30 with free shipping. There are many such kits available, so just search for one. Some carbon repair shops specialize in repairing and refinishing carbon frames. But based on the pricing I’ve seen, a professional repair on my cracked Specialized S-Works frame would cost over $400. That’s too much for me. Plus, I wanted to see how easy it would be to complete a DIY repair. Some pro shops claim that nearly every carbon fiber frame can be repaired no matter how severe the damage. Even if the tubes are broken. And that repairs are stronger than the original bike, with no measurable additional weight, and don’t alter the bike’s ride. My frame was cracked, which is not all that severe, so I can’t say from personal experience. If I have any cracked or broken frames in the future, I will definitely be performing the repair myself. Overall I thought it was very quick and easy. The most time consuming part was sanding down the new epoxy. It’s possible to repair: Cracked Tubes Separated/Missing Tubes Tube Replacement Dropout Replacement Car and roof rack accidents Water bottle mount add-on Handlebars Seat posts Carbon rims Seat masts / topper This video was about a carbon fiber layup repair, not paint. I did not paint the repair. My understanding is that a raw finish is just as durable as a painted repair, and won’t scratch and chip like paint would. Raw finishes require no maintenance. local bike shop instead of online kit

i would put a piece of vinyl wrap on top ......

Do these carbon fiber frames have a shelf life??? .
-
The only reason this "works" is because the damage is not yet structural. The "soft spot" has no more impact on the frame than any of the many holes fabricated into the frame for convenience. The fix likely prevented the damage from becoming a structural issue, which makes it okay, but it does not compare to a properly vacuumed and baked repair. Additionally, the layering and addition of material is introducing new stress points. It may cause stress to be moved to the end points of the additional material in ways for which the frame was not designed. But again, it works and is cheaper than buying a new frame.

i have found some kits on ebay that comes with carbon fiber cloth or some type of carbon fiber (expoxy and hardener is same but cloth looks slightly different material in some of the pic posted on by ebay seller unless some pic is misleading), a few made by bike shop one is made from predator cycling that cost over 100$ and couple of the following links on amazon...do u know which one works well? should i go with the ones on ebay or the ones on amazon... do price matters, i notice the one that cost more comes wrap in box with instructions and maybe just slightly more stuff with cup brush which i can get myself at a 99 cent store...here are a few links...let me know your opinion or suggestion ... hope to hear back ASAP thanks!

Good Job!
-
you should wrap that with polywrap and tape to squeeze out excess epoxy. it will turn out stronger and lighter
-
Epoxy over cured epoxy makes a weak bond without some type of heat treatment, just hitting the first layer of epoxy with a heat gun just to make the epoxy thin and runny can increase the bond strength over 50 percent. The thinner you can get the epoxy the more it will flow into the tinny holes and gaps in the cured part, making a way better bond.
This job will never break but epoxy weighs a lot, you want to get as much out of the epoxy out as possible without getting it to dry it will make it a hell of a lot stronger too. You can vacuum bag it with all the right materials and suck out as much epoxy as possible or you can wrap the carbon with nylon peel ply then wrap some fabric that can soak up epoxy, a sock.
then duck tape the hell out of it with each wrap as tight as possible, the end result will be lighter, stronger and look better. I would of used unidirectional carbon, and the last layer a very thin layer of 2x2 twill, that would make it almost bullet proof lol. -
Did it hold up? That's just how they make it, resin and sheets of fiber. The only difference is the quality of the fibre and how it's woven.
Safe riding! -
That's what you get for buying a Specialized shitbag
-
That's a great repair! Where did you buy the carbon? I bet eBay does it!?
-
That sir, was a good idea, but I'd just leave it to the pros or get a new bike.
-
Carbon fiber is shit. Go for high grade aluminium frame.
-
This is a amateur repair.
to much resin...you need to get rid of excess resin.
You need to fleatten the fibres in the hardening proces.
otherwise you sand of carbon afterwards...like you did....
and......DO NOT ever use a machine.......
it looks nice in the end, but.... i would not descent on this frame .
and you should consider uv protection in form of a coating... -
Now all carbon dudes said: "thanks man you save our lives" :V
On the other side we always say: "Yeah we know that STEEL IS REAL hahaha" :p
Truth Always Painful -
In my bamboo bike building class, the importance of wrapping the epoxy was stressed. Use electrical tape sticky side up. It will squeeze the excess epoxy out, and the epoxy with then cure under compression for a much stronger finished product.
-
do not ride that bike any bumps you hit at speed it will de-lam and snap again. you need to vac bag it wet lay just wont do. good luck.
-
why did it crack in the first place ??
-
aaaa.... is the carbon lightness of the bike really that important compared to the durability? now you can get aluminium and steel bikes at around 10 kg and they will be awesome because they will last a lifetime and they won't crack
-
Its important that carbon fiber fabric be cured under pressure to make these sorts of repairs structurally sound. You can use a vacuum bagging or tape wrap technique, but just laying the carbon on the tube and painting epoxy on is not advisable. There is the danger of dry areas and air pockets. These can make the repair very unreliable.
