1. If all people who cycle in the Netherlands would instead drive cars, all cities would now be in permanent gridlock. Its rarely mentioned but that is what smart politicians in the 70's realised. We never really had a choice.

3. Seeing a video like this makes me wanna jump on my bike and drive a little in the country side, just for relaxing and fun. I live in the south of the Netherlands and theres alot of long lanes of bicycle paths.

10. The Dutch live in a flat country, so it's possible. Where I am it's hilly, riding a bike can be exhausting and time consuming, riding a motorbike makes more sense.
11. I live in utrecht. Every modern city/country can do what we did with our cycling infrastructure. It just takes the will, and time. We didn't have this 40 years ago. We built it, and it is still being perfected and expanded where needed. Build it, make it safe and convenient, and the utilitarian cyclists will come! People cycle in sun, rain and snow here. Because it's cheap, safe and often quicker than driving. It also offers freedom for kids (who cycle to school, friends, clubs etc. unaccompanied from the age of about 8) and it keeps the elderly more healthy and active, too. People of all ages and walks of life cycle here! (btw I'm sure more than 50% of kids cycle to school...)

14. Nice to learn something about your own country from abroad, I never knew we were heading for a more car-centered aproach in the 60s & 70s and I;m glad we haven't pulled through on that. I've been cycling my whole life and it's basically just the best way to get around nowadays: cheap & healthy :)
    
    I agree the distances covered here are much less the in the UK, but still, for short trips to the city centre, no one should have to take their verhicle...

17. Very nice video! At 1.45 you tell in the mid 1970's the first separate cycle paths were built. That is only partially true, there were separate cycle paths in the 1960's as well. I was born in 1961, and I can't remember the secondary road between Dongen and Tilburg in the south of the Netherlands without a cycle path... It has been renewed and widened in the 1980's. But a lot of cycle infrastructure, also within the citylimits is built from the mid 1970's. Another example is the secondary road between Dongen and Rijen. Has had a cycle path as long as I know. Was bidirectional and a bit narrow. The second cycle path at the other road side is built in 1976. Was a big improvement!
18. Not left or right priority for a bike, just the same as between cars now. If you coming from the left on your bike, you really do not have priority.
