Clinchers Vs Tubulars Vs Tubeless – Which Tyres Should You Choose For Your Road Bike & Why?

The clinchers vs. tubulars debate is long running. Which tyres should you choose? Click here to subscribe to our channel: http://gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN Clincher tyres are the standard; they're almost certainly what you had on your bike when you first got it. Tubular tyres are the pro racers standard; they need to be glued to your wheels, which takes a bit of expertise, but the pros had steadfastly refused to move away from them, even though excellent clincher tyres and wheels are now available. And, now there's a third option, tubeless clincher tyres. These have been used in mountain biking for years now, but have proved more difficult to adapt to the road and are yet to really gain much traction in the pro peloton, although they do offer lots of grip. Which do you ride? Let us know what and why in the comments. Open Tubulars = Tubeless?
-
Lance Armstrong has one ball.

3:54 did he just said 180psi?
-
Each type has it's own pros and cons. This video offer very narrow point of view.
We know the pros of tubs, what riders fear most is flat. Check around youtube, it is not hard to change tubs when you get a flat.
We know the pros of clinchers, but when having a flat it is not really a simple task to change inner tube without pinch flat it, especially latex tubes. Realizing another flat when pumping up and destroying your ticket home.
Tubeless is not puncture proof. Performance-wise it still has a lot to answer. Trying riding without a spare tubeless can be disastrous. -
Do any of the pro peloton teams use this tubeless setup?
-
UPDATE: Ask Tony Martin if clinchers are good.

What about tubeless tubular ?
-
Hi guys, have you done a piece on a TT bike back disc wheel and best tyre/tyre size/psi?
-
I wonder if Matt glued and repaired his own sewups before he became fully sponsored? I only use them for racing. I use normal clinchers for everything else.

These two guys really make me laugh. I always learn something but they are ok with taking the piss out of themselves. Awesome

Listen carefully to the very subtle wordplay from Simon at 6:03. I think I'm not enTIREly sure either :). Well done mate!

Still nothing out there to compare with silk tubulars.
They are expensive, and can be a lot of labor but life
is just too short to ride clinchers. Some things in life
just cannot be compromised.
Kind of like custom tailored clothes. You just can't go back. -
nice view of the crotch.

Outstanding advice and you're asking good questions!

Looking to upgrade my wheel set and want to run 25C or 28C tubeless tires. But how wide should the rims be to best match such tires? E.g. 622-17, -19, -20 or ..?
-
Bit of a fudge to weigh a disc wheel vs.a non-disc, and then guesstimate what the disc and the beefier hub weigh? And are the spokes the same?
-
Carbon Tubs are also used because they don't warp or pop the inner tubes when you are heavily breaking on a descent. Carbon wheels are not designed to be clincher. This obviously isn't a problem if you have disc brakes.
-
my local bike shop is selling 29er inner tubes super cheap and when I asked why, I was surprised to hear that they were converting most bikes to tubeless, in-house.
-
Have you ever came across Tufo tubular clinchers? That'd be great to hear your opinion about this unique offering of this Czech manufacturer.

are there disadvantages to lifting weights and road bike racing?
