Cycling to school; Culemborg (Netherlands)
bicycles reviews | bicycles videos | bicycles online
Hundreds of thousands of children cycle to school every morning in the Netherlands. Kids cycling up to 15km one way are no exception. The roads and streets are literally full of cycling children for about one hour. The "cycle highway" from Geldermalsen to Culemborg is one such road. Hundreds of children going to school take the same safe route here. They form spontaneous groups and the closer they get to school the larger the groups become. When the school bell rings and all the children are in class, the cycle highway looks as deserted as it was before the kids went to school. The kids are so polite saying hello and waving at the camera man. If it had been here in the United States they would have been making rude comments and flipping off the camera.

how long is the ride? average

I wonder how weird it must have felt to be one of those teenagers being filmed by a 46 year man they didn't know who was filming such an ordinary thing.

It would be super to see something like this at the schools in my locality rather than the car madness that holds at present. But neither schools local authority government parents or anyone else will encourage it. Would it not be super way to wean our young of the total madness of the car culture that has taken over this country.

Biking needs to be an option for people traveling in all countries...... the US needs to develop more safe walking and biking paths. It is important to have a diverse set of options for travel. Safe walking and biking paths need to be part of any road construction project. Safe paths that separate walking and biking lanes from cars and truck would provide an alternative to the automobile. There also needs to be more mass transit like city trolley lines

Every school should encourage children to walk to school or ride a bicycle by providing safe places to lock and store bicycles and by supporting safe walking and biking paths that connect schools, homes and businesses. Kids would be healthier and get more exercise if parents stop driving them to school and bought them a bicycle.

Bike to work day should be everyday..... employers needs to provide places to park and lock bicycles and encourage employees to ride a bicycle to work. Exercise...... get off the couch.... get outside....... do something......ride a bicycle or go for a walk. Some cities and states encourage bikes.......... they provide safe walking and biking lanes and trails. Cities also should encourage businesses and apartments to provide safe places to lock or store a bicycle. Encourage your elected officials to do more. Speak up.. become an advocate for bicycle use in your city.

wow just wow looks like a dream.

Notice there are no fat kids.

They are lucky

Notice the lighting on the bicycle path. It is closer to the ground than the lighting for motorized traffic and it is spaced closer together as well. This contributes to the safety and well-being of those cycling during off hours.

I could watch this all day long.
With 1,200 children near schools being injured on UK roads every month, isn't it time we moved towards this? The peace and tranquillity is unrivalled. I want my children to grow up in this environment. -
The spelling shows it as well that you're American.

Not having a car is not the same as not being able to afford a car. I have lived in the Netherlands and didn't own a car when I was 30, simply because I didn't need one. Even someone living on social welfare in that country easily has enough money to own a car if he/she wants to.

For anyone's knowledge: Cyclists are not supposed to ride with three or more next to each other.

thats very cute
-
the thing is if america made this mandatory all the kids would have cardiac arrests
