Cyclists behaving badly - Understanding cyclist disobedience in Amsterdam
bicycles reviews | bicycles videos | bicycles online
As anyone who has spent time in Amsterdam can attest, cyclists here own the streets. In an age of increasing animosity between cyclists and motorists, Amsterdam is an unusual case. Cyclists so routinely break rules with little regard for injury or fine that many would consider Amsterdam as the wild west of cycling. But maybe there is a method to all this madness. This animation explores the Dutch cycling culture and the rolling rebelliousness that has made this city infamous around the world. Written, narrated and animated by Lucas Brailsford. Special thanks to Marco te Brömmelstroet at the Urban Cycling Institute. Post Production Sergiusz Sytniejewski. Music: "Beep" by Podington Bear

the bigger problem is, that many cyclist do not look or indicate where they are going or look at the crosses/teeths. i had multiple accidents that a cyclist randomly turned left or right without indicating, final result was that i was not prepared for that move. and i crashed into the person.
to make cycling overal safe is
-Look behind. you so the cyclist behind you know you`re about to. stop/turn
- The use of hand signals and looking behind you combined. by looking you will inform you`re about to make an action. which means nobody will overtake you. When raising your arm left or right. the person behind you will either slow down or stop or if you go left they will overtake you on the right. or if you go right they will overtake you on the left! : )
-Look at the goddamn shark tooths. i had many accidents because other cyclist did not stop. even i had way! -
Why are you calling it Omsterdom?

It's not behaving badly. It's working towards a disability rating.
If you drive a cycle drunk and text, the chance that you will get disabled and qualify for a lifetime of free income increases.
Irresponsibly does pay. It's behaving responsibility that costs (in paying taxes). -
I feel this is entirely different in any city other than Amsterdam. I'm not from a city though.

Great video! I visited Amsterdam from US 3 years ago and I miss it terribly. I hope to return soon! What program did you use to make this video? Cheers

This is one of the best videos I've seen on the topic - excellent work!

With this video I cannot completely I agree. I agree on the part too strict rules and obligations like helmet wear actually discourage the use bikes, but there are some rules that just need to be followed, like riding without a light for instance. Some of these rules are really necessary and should also be enforced in a (soft) way. Still, even in cities with very little car traffic or access for vehicles, there is some kind of need for code to respect the integrity of both cyclists and pedestrians.

Super video. You presented a philosophical twist that rings true to me.
-
You wrongly think you don't have a problem riding without working lights (or riding drunk). The error you make is that you're more concerned about getting the €55 ticket for not having lights instead of being concerned about your own and others safety.

So that number of how many people had been drinking to much that where on the bike, is higher than it should be. Drunk people don't see the police standing, smart not drunk people wil get around. You see? Test results are bullshit.
-
In the video I noticed most of the bikes are of a similar style - sit-up vicars wives type this does not promote the competitive and aggressive attitude we have on the roads in Britain
-
Great concept. I invite you to come to Mexico City and see if you feel safe running a red light. I don't, but I rather take my chances than losing my inertia and stopping next to smokey-smelly vehicles.
