For a more detailed description visit: http://www.bicycle-alley.net/factories-in-china-might-not-grease-bearings-properly-on-big-box-store-bicycles/ In this video I take apart the headset on a Roadmaster Granite Peak bicycle, and inspect the amount of grease on the bearings. Thanks for Watching!

I just bought a new Roadmaster and there was no grease in the BB. The BB felt like sand, so I replaced it with a good used one. Before I rode I replaced the pedals with used steel pedals, the BB, the seat and inner tubes. I also ran two layers of electrical tape ovèr the rim strip for added protection. I am going to change the shifters to friction someday. I now have a bike that will last a long time and I can leave outside the library and such and not worry so much as far as theft. My first ride was today, this bike is comfortable but very heavy. I locked it for 7 hrs in front of the library, and it was still there for me when I got out. Thanks for posting because there are a lot of people with this bike.

Recently I have assembled my own roadmaster bike and the headset is pretty loose, I have tightened the screw on the top of the headset to the extent I can't circulate it anymore but the headset is still pretty loose. I have no idea how to figure out my problem, could you help me how to tighten the headset of this bike?

I bought a big box store bike when I was a teenager. We took one that was still in the box, rather than assembled. Now that I think about it, that is probably why it lasted as long as it did, because we greased it when we put it together and we re-greased it when I crashed into a tree and had to replace the frame.

I have a mountain bike from Walmart that I picked up for about 147 last Christmas n I just checked the shocks today n there was no oil at all n inside of the bike I could see rusty inside of the rear hole in the back of the bike by the tire but I gotta say that my bike is crazy strong to ride on I have jumped over stuff the size of my tire n nothing happened but now the nuts are rusting because every other week I ride at the beach n that is happening

Surprisingly these bikes will last decade through neglect even though they have they have signs of corrosion and wear

just curious did you also lube the bottom bracket and axles?

I say no, i just repacked and lubed my BB when i opened it, not a drop of grease, it was rusty and the bearings were bone dry. I was actually shocked, i knew walmart bikes sucked, but no grease......c'mon!!

The coating on the bearing cages was probably put on by the part manufacturer to prevent corrosion in storage and shipping. Management at the assembly line is responsible for not adding grease. Greasing adds a lot of time and labor expenses for a big production run.
I wish mass market boxed bicycles would just include the loose parts and let customers or bike shops assemble them. Cyclists have the most incentive to do the job well. It would save money for everyone too.
