Do You Really Need a 450 Dirt Bike? - Episode 109

Support us on Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/dirtbikechannel It's an honest question. By default, everyone thinks they need the most power available. We think we need the biggest motor with the most horse power, and the fastest possible top speed. Is this the correct line of thinking? Would many of us (including me) be better of with less power? A good rider can squeeze more potential out of a smaller bike than an average rider can squeeze out of a 450. Guess who's going to be faster overall? The point of this video is to get some of my viewers thinking about dropping down in displacement and then focusing on fundamentals to become better riders. I know that some of my riding buddies and I have been thinking about this for some time now. I'm on the lookout for a good 250 four stroke to do some testing on. This summer, I tested two different 250 4 stroke dirt bikes. I had only ever ridden 450 4 strokes. Guess that I learned. I learned that 250 4 stroke bikes are more fun to ride! They have the same frames, same suspension, same tires, same components, and the same trimmings. They are pretty much identical in every way except for the motors. The great thing about riding a 250 is that it inspires confidence. You can grab a fist full of throttle when coming out of corners without worrying about getting tossed on your backside, and the result is forward motion and shear joy! You end up coming in to corners harder and leaving them with more speed most of the time. Guys will tell you that a 250 wears our faster than a 450 because you are “riding it harder”, but I’m honestly not sure that is true. I think it’s just something that people speculate on, but there may not be data to actually back that up. Even IF it is true, knowing what I know now, I’d take less time between motor work on the 250 because I’m having more fun the entire time. The 350 motor may be the best fit for most guys though. It’s not as light and nimble as the 250, but doesn’t feel as heavy and lumbering as the 450. If I could only have one bike and it HAD to be a 4 stroke, it would be hard for me to choose between the 250 XC-F and the 350 XC-F, because I have more fun on the 250, but the 350 is probably more versatile. http://www.dirtbikechannel.com/parts/ Want to help support Dirt Bike Channel? I am 14 years old and I ride a 450 and can handle it

I'm 14 years old and my dad said "when you save up enough money your going to have to get atleast a 400 cc bike" mostly because I want to buy my own bike and it shows me to have respect for my bike, but I told him I want a 250 and he think it's terrible that I want it. He's so stupid cause he has a 650 and he wants to ride trails with us.

leave the 450 to the big boys
-
speak for yourself
just cuz you not that good of a rider don't trash the 450. -
i have a 2014 ktm sx 250 two stroke and i love putting my mates who think they are tough with yz 450s and when they get on the pipe watching them fully loop my bike i have spent 400 dolars in back mud gaurds but it has all been worth it most of my mates now have ktm 300s and 250s and now they can keep up with me without looking like a retard doing it

Is there any way to make a 450 like a 350s power
-
There s a lot of truth here but clearly opinion and preference. The better question is do you use all the power of the 450 and most of us would probably say NO BUT we want if we need it. Hence your stall climbing that rock section. And Im not saying 2 strokers cant clear rock sections. Enjoy your 2 stroke 300 if that's your gig but questioning other folks preference .... well you could of just left this video in the realms of your personal thoughts.

So I rode my buddies 2006 YZ450F. Loved it because I'm out of shape and have had spinal surgery. I could just lug around on it and it didn't get stuck in the sand areas. I'm gonna buy a bike now. Will a 250F let me lug around with ease also? Or will I have to be actually hitting the throttle a lot more trying not to get stuck or not able to crawl up a hill? What do you think I should get? I feel like the 450F I can stay in low gears and it has so much power I can just always crawl around and go up hills with ease and less shifting. Can I do that on a 2006 YZ250F? Or will I be shiffting a lot more trying to find a gear and habving t ring its neck which is what I don't want. Please advise. Thanks

You really don't need a 450 but yet you have one lol...........
He is right though lots of ppl buy 450's just to have the biggest bike I'm 23 and I've had my 06 yz250f and it's more than enough power than I've ever needed but I hope to get the new yz250 -
I must admit that my 450s beat the shit out of me in the mountains, my mates 250 is much more pleasant to ride. I do enjoy the raw power of the 450 though, I'd be faster on a 250 for sure but I'll always pick the 450 first, maybe I like the punishment.

This is kind of random, but when you shift, do you release the throttle before you pull the clutch?

Adam cianciarulo Is way better you don't no what you are talking about 😤😤😤

All this video did was make me excited about moving up to a 450. I've been riding my 250 for close to 5 years now and I've lost interest in riding even though Its always been my favorite thing to do since I was 3. For me, if I no longer get scared on a bike and lose that rush, well that means It's time to upgrade. For me at least

Great video, hope it steers new riders in the right direction, don't get a big 450cc bike that you can ride at 50 percent, instead get a 250cc that you can ride at 100 percent, from 40 years of riding dirt bikes experience, you are absolutely correct on all points given. Another point, Andrew Short, you know him, the professional rider, SX, MX long career, fast, friendly guy, has said many times you can ride an entire SX track in 2nd gear alone with a 450, only needing 3rd and sometimes 4th depending on the approach, in the whoop section.

Hey, i have been wondering which bike i should get when i turn 18. Mainly i have been thinking of yamaha wr 450f and make it supermoto. But now i have been thinking if 250cc would be better since i drive 95% of the time in streets where i dont need that much speed. And now i am using 125cc bike so would you recommend the 250 one or 450 one?
-
I just bought a yz450f to keep up with my buddies lol.
-
what about a 230???
-
A 250 is too slow in traffic, unless you mod the shit out of it. You alway want more power, doesn't mean you have to use all of it. Yamaha need to make a bike with the R1 motor in it.

your a wise man man.....i would by a 250 4t i like to go full on the (throtle) gas and rev it out
