Dutch cyclists talk helmets and bicycles

In June 2011, I asked some locals in Amsterdam questions related to cycling and helmets. Enjoy! :)

They don't care enough about their lives to make the effort to protect their heads - and lose the ego. I admire them for cycling so much but the truth is that they're NOT very smart people. (Yes, regardless of their upright posture or speed.) I ALWAYS wear a helmet. Has saved me several times. I even prefer a skateboard helmet for better coverage. It would be even safer to wear a full face helmet.

About the Australia question.. I'm from Holland, and i have been many times to AUS. You see no one without a helmet on a bike. I think all the people in this video are just to shy to admit they will wear one. They should be ashame for saying out loud that they will break the law when visiting another country.

i always thought helmet should be personal choice however last week my life was saved by one
Holland is very bike aware so comparing it to Uk,Usa and Australia is wrong

I think it is important to wear a helmet when you have more cars and trucks on the road. It's not dangerous when you are surrounded by bikes. It's really nice that Amsterdam is a cycle friendly city; you get a little workout during your commute.

Helmets are for sissies and dangerous to boot. As is the case with seatbelts, people behave riskier than without, due to a false sense of safety. Should our "wise overlords" make wearing these ridiculous plastic mushrooms (google: Obama helmet) mandatory, rebellion would break out.

I actually looked at the option and made the decision that the helmets really add no value... Besides if I get hit that hard, I'd rather die than survive as a vegetable...

Bicycle helmets are overrated.

You have to understand that the culture here in the United States is very different from the Netherlands. They really don't care if they hit you and kill while you are riding your bicycle. Many people are very rude and disrespectful. There is almost no penalty for hitting and killing a cyclist. The car is king in the United States and many people worship their vehicles. Bicycling is not taken seriously and is viewed as childish behavior. If you ride a bicycle in the streets you become a non person (thing) and you are asking to be hit. It is really very much like swimming in a tank full of sharks with the idea that you won't get bit. You are very lucky to live in another country. Now you understand why people in the United States wear helmets, very sad.

Just bought my first Cyclocross bike. Bought a helmet because I value my life, so why not wear one.

Helmets are a useless piece of garbage. Just about the only purpose they serve is to promote the idea that cycling is less safe, when in fact driving your car is far worse - yet no one seriously considers wearing a helmet while driving despite the fact that those things have been invented (and instantly buried by the auto industry because they want to perpetuate this lie).
Also when helmets are enforced by law, they instantly result in a big drop in the number of cyclists. This has two effects: 1. The fewer cyclists there are on the streets the more dangerous cycling becomes (presumably because cars are more used to seeing bikes) and 2. More people do not gain the vast health advantages of cycling, which far outweigh any risks, nor does society benefit (since cycling represents a net gain).
Yet another factor is risk compensation. Studies have shown that wearing a helmet can result in more reckless cycling, thus offsetting the protection it offers (little as that is to begin with). In that sense, wearing helmets can actually increase the likelihood of being in an accident.
So to sum up the helmet: 1. Offers little protection, 2. Is illogical relative to other more dangerous activities, 3. Sends a false message - a message the auto industry wants to perpetuate, 4. Lowers the number of cyclists on the roads, making it more dangerous for everyone and resulting in a net loss to society, and 5. Can increase the likelihood of accidents.
Throw that shit in the garbage and just bike ffs. -
4:33 I don't understand what's he talking - helmet is funny or homosexual? )

Would you purposely bash your head against a wall? You wouldn't be going very fast so it wouldn't really hurt.
-
They probably were younger than four or five. That's already old here. Most kids know how to cycle without sidewheels when they're three years old.
-
I choose to wear a helmet because I don't trust drivers. If a car hits you from behind you're not gonna have enough time to cover your head. I don't care weather it's cool or not. I'd rather reduce the risk of getting brain damage or dying in an accident.

Much more people get head injuries in car accidents so by that logic people should wear Helmets in cars.

It's not true that helmets are compulsory in Germany and most people ride without one. The Dutch sure like the idea that Germans are not as cool as them :)That said, if you (like me) hit speeds above 20mph commuting and there is car traffic, you will soon want to wear one. At 10 mph (Dutch speed), no problem. At 20mph, the impact is much more significant if you crash.Wearing a helmet has saved me from a bad crash where I went over the bars and hit the tarmac. I think a hole in the head looks a lot worse than helmet hair.Btw I ride in office clothes, not lycra or hi-viz. I use a singlespeed bike, not a road bike.
