New Elephant and Castle Layout Part 1 New Kent Road to St Georges Road I don't normally go this way but i needed to yesterday and coincidentally the cycle lanes had just opened. If i was driving i'd take the right hand lane on the bend so that i could make the right turn onto st Georges Rd. The new cycle lane directs you down the left side of the bend with no option to safely move across to the right. It seams the only way to make this exit is to hop off the cycle lane at the pedestrian lights and re-position to cross on the pedestrian/cycle crossing phase. This isn't intuitive and takes ages! I asked the TFL officers what to do and they confirmed that "at present I should just use the live carriageway". This is fine for me as I feel confident enough to do so but the point of these new cycle lanes is to encourage the less confident. I don't think the planners have been successful here......yet. It's worth noting that the consultation showed a cycle link cutting out the bend altogether, going form the first set of lights at the end of New Kent Rd, across the pavement area to the lights that I ended up at. This seams more intuitive for the less confident but its currently not marked as a shared use pavement nor is it marked as a possible route so nobody would know to use it. Part 2 of the video coming soon - Heading north from Newington Butts to New Kent Road.
