Examine it! Electric Bicycles in a Crash Test | drive it
bicycles reviews | bicycles videos | bicycles online
Electric bicycles are gaining in popularity in Germany, with double digit growth in recent years. But the new, faster bikes also pose safety risks. The electric bicycles can reach speeds of up to 45 kilometers an hour. Many people underestimate the speed of electric bikes with often fatal consequences. We join accident researchers from German insurers to see how electric bikes perform in crash tests.

According to Bicycling.com, the average recreational road biker moves at 17 to 18 miles per hour on a flat surface. Downhill speeds can hit 40 mph or more.
The average E-bike goes 20-25MPH MAX SPEED. The advantage to the rider is in the assist on uphill or long rides.
There are many, many people who would not be able to ride at all if it were not for this assistance.
This "news report" is ridiculous, this video is ridiculous and your conclusions are biased, not properly researched, total misinformation and ludicrous! -
Dummy: "A bicyclist just clipped me with his elbow, I better fall over and break my fall with my face."
-
this video is stupid...just stay aware .at all times while riding....and guess what accidents happen....all the more reason to stay aware at all times,,,...much love....Tee with LIONS NAMED LEO who rides a HPC electric bike a lot !
-
This is politics to not to bring clean energy in use ..... f off ....
-
E-Bike = 25kmh me on my Roadbike = 40kmh travel speed
-
dummies are not going to protect their fall or break, or just move out of the way.. I biked for years, even crashed without a helmet, never even come close to injuring myself.
-
Love how the preachy end has a bunch of dipshits not wearing helmets . that's more unsafe than this bogus test . This is just money grab research for insurance companies. Soon you will have to get Jr a insurance card to ride on the sidewalk

How stupid would you have to be to hit a car or person at full speed. You're not going 45kph all the time! And another unrealistic thing about the tests is that you'd put your arms out in such a crash. I actually find ebikes safer than normal bikes. My one goes 23Mph/37Kph; you can keep up with the traffic so less cars pass you potentially crashing into you. You can also ride out of the door zone of death (also giving more time to react to people walking out) and take the middle of the lane when it is unsafe to go near the curb.

exaggerated

Although some valid point were made I found a number of problems with the tests. ! - when a human on a bike hit's another human walking or riding, the real human can probably stableise the dummies couldn't thus avoiding injury. I also felt tghis was a little in favour of the insurance business looking for a bigger market. We live in times when peak oil has been reached and everyone (including business) is trying to find a solution to travel, but stick the financial President in and the alternative suddenly doesn't be come an alternative just another "Fat Cat's" bottom line. I'm both a cyclist and Motorcyclist and my insurance is clean and so is my license, Why? Education using a bit of common sense. not just cyclist's but other road users including pedestrians should be better educated to thin ka bout each other. here endeth the reading!

I had no idea e-bikes were such death traps! Sure they're quiet, cheap, fun and get 100 miles for $0.25 of electricity. I'm going back to driving my Hummer, I'm sure it's safer for pedestrians & other road users.

If the mode of transportation has the word "Motor" in it. It should be classified as vehicle, and all road laws should apply.
-
"A normal peddle bike with no motor can reach over 30 mph & down hill they can hit 50mph, do we see millions of deaths a day by push bike on push bike deaths? NOPE and yet they are able to go faster lol
-
A dummy cannot raise it's arms for protection!
-
At what speeds, to start?
-
good thing you opinion is meaningless
-
Yo pensaba igual que tu, pero el test esta recreando una escena en el peor de los casos.
-
Exactly same accidents can happent with a regular bike...

After riding motorcycles for 40 years, I set up my 1000 watt electric bicycle like a motorcycle with extra daytime front and tail running lights, turn and stop signals, mirrors, and horn. The bike is capable of 54 KPH which is normally too fast for a bicycle, but allows me to climb hills at closer to close normal speed. I also wear a helmet, eye protection, sun visor, and a lime green reflective vest. All of these safety precautions many not prevent all accidents, but I need to try.
