17:18 travelling via pedal cycle on School Lane, Didsbury towards Kingsway with clear visibility on dry roads. I filtered on the left-hand side of stationary vehicles towards traffics lights, vehicle reg:- YD05AUA Dark Grey Toyota passenger door opens I have less than 2 seconds to react I collide with open door at a speed of 12-15MPH. As well the vehicle was stationary in a keep clear zone. I come off my bike and landed hard on the pavement, as I got back on my feet I felt dizzy and was literally seeing stars, pick up my GoPro and put it in my bag pocket thinking it broke while doing this I can hear the driver and passenger argue blaming each other for opening the door. Neither parties got out of the car or spoke to myself I interrupted and asked the driver to pull over to get his and her details, traffic lights turn green and driver makes off leaving part of his damaged door trim behind. Contacted the police via 101 and the traffic unit stated no offence has been committed his reason "the drive is not to blame for the actions of a passenger and you won't be able to claim on his insurance (which I knew) " I advised the officer I logged a hit and run they made off from scene of an accident reply "it's a difficult one because you were filtering which I know is in the highway code but it dangerous CYCLIST KNOW THIS BUT YOU DO IT ANYWAY " "I will send out the forms but like I said nothing is going to happen so you don't have to fill them out" At this point, I knew I wasn't going to get far so I let him finish and the call ended. 16.09.16 contacted the police explained circumstances and they said I was misinformed by the officer, they will get in touch. 2 hours later receive voice mail from the same traffic unit officer saying "been contacted regarding your accident as said yesterday it will be difficult to trace the passenger and the driver hasn't committed any offence as such" Update 28/09/2016 as per comments and multiple phone calls police agree an offensive has been committed Forms and cctv returned just got to wait and see update 13-10-16 no further info from police feel like I'm fighting a losing battle Copyright Stockport Cyclist, only embedded function allowed to be used except with express permission

Hello sir, would it be possible to use this video in my car crash Compilation? my compilation always help others to drive safely. Credit and Links in the description.
Looking forward to hear from you. -
OK, that was horrible, and you were really unlucky. And they were jerks for driving off.
But these risks exist. I don't see why cyclists think it's OK to pretend the risk doesn't exist and overtake regardless.
When you overtake - whether it's on the left or right or between vehicles or whether you call it filtering or not - you are the one overtaking and you have the primary responsibility to make it safe. That means leaving a margin for error - room to respond to the unexpected. Too many cyclists don't leave any margin for error. None at all. They pretend the danger doesn't exist and put themselves in danger. And when it goes wrong they look to blame others. That isn't safe behaviour. And it isn't reasonable to take risks and expect others to make it safe.
What I'm saying is if you want to gamble you have to accept the consequences if it doesn't pay off.
I know this won't be popular, but people need to face up to facts and make informed choices. Don't stick your head in the sand and deny your part in events. -
Your fault for undertaking. Did you offer to pay for any damage you did to the car?
-
Mate that blue colour font you are using , no one can read it. Dark blue writing on a black backround. doesnt work.
-
You can't let this slide man, i've heard of drivers and passengers dooring cyclists and bikers deliberately to stop them "queue jumping", this effectively suggests it's perfectly ok to do so and THAT is not good for anyone. It actually happened to a biker friend of mine, though he managed to stop in time and confront the angry woman responsible.
-
It's not your fault you should report it to the police. BTW can't read the blue text on the black back ground.
-
IMHO the blue text on the black background doesn't work too well.
Hope you never suffered any injuries. -
car was as fault. Not only was stopped in a keep clear marked zone, passengers responsibility to check before opening door. To then drive off is a further offence....basically your everyday, common place arrogant single minded twat....hope u ok.
-
the car is at fault...
sew them for the hit and run and every possible damages! -
SUE that minor in a small claims court.
-
that's why you ride t the right in a traffic jam never the left incase of door opening etc etc
-
I got doored in a similar fashion in Rusholme. The Driver has a responsibility to ensure it is safe for the passenger to exit, stopping in the carriageway and allowing a passenger to exit the car is clearly not a safe and responsible action. I have no doubt their insurance company will take a similar view. I also got 'lucky' as the vehicle behind was an Ambulance who checked me out and patched me up.

First off, take this to the Road Policing unit (in Eccles). Traffic cops know the road laws better than the average bobby, who make the same presumptions as many road usrs.
Rule 239 of the Highway code says "you MUST ensure you do not hit anyone when you open your door. Check for cyclists or other traffic", and the driver is responsible for any passengers carried (eg, they have to make sure passengers wear seat belts).
Finally, demand that the driver provides details (and point out that they are legally required to do so after a collision).... if they refuse and drive away, then they have broken the law.
Don't let the police bullshit you... go to your MP, who will write to the Chief Constable of GMP.... things happen then.
I have a hit&run incident of my own that will be going to court on the 21st of Oct, and I had to fight to get it because the local bobby's wanted to deal; with it bu a local resolution, rather than traffic offences. -
No, motorcycles / cyclists shouldn't be banned from filtering. I'd rather ride into an opening door than get rear ended by a car any day. Much safer to filter.

The way cyclists are treated in this country is simply disgusting. The condescending ignorance of the police - or is it intentional? - is sickening. But rather than teaching our police the law when it comes to cyclists, the Department for Transport spends a few hundred thousands on a victim blaming ad campaign that will most certainly reinforce some drivers' perception they are allowed to drive recklessly around cyclists https://youtu.be/m7lBvN80JaQ?list=PLWKvTTYodI2YjQy1w826SK-xaRpTzmcfI

I am not a lawyer, but I would be very surprised if a hit and run is only considered a "hit and run" if the victim was not a cyclist. The passenger left the scene of the accident without leaving her details. And the fact you are a cyclist doesn't mean the law applies any less, or are we living in some underdeveloped country where the law only applies to some?
It certainly seems all the motor-supremacists out there in the police force and at the DfT would like it to be that way. -
I never filter. I pull up behind the last stopped car in the middle of the lane, or even towards the centre line so that I am visible to oncoming turning traffic.
