Who says you can't polish a turd? I try to do it all the time without spending a whole lot, or any money at all... and because I'm so cocky, I think I'm pretty damn good at it.

It's easy to get carried away with upgrades on an entry level bike. For a beginner XC rider this bike is more than enough, I would only change grips, saddle and pedals. If you plan to upgrade your entry level bike in the future its better to spend more and get the bike with all the components you would want. I spent loads of money upgrading a second hand Rockhopper only to realise that for the total amount spent on both bike and parts I could have purchased a new bike with better components.

If the graphics on the frame appear to be a decal (not enamel painted on) it can be removed with "Klean-strip" epoxy solvent. A can cost only a few dollars at any hardware store. A bike with little or no branding always looks more serious, in my opinion.
