Jesus, that bike is really crude. Mightn't you have got something fitted with Campag record at least? And I'm pretty sure that Pedro would have been riding on Clement number 6 tyres, that is, silk singles, not those crappy clinchers. But I think the lack of toeclips totally invalidates any comparison.
-
Would the results have been different, if the rider was completely used to the old school bike and had never ridden a modern machine?
-
Old schoOl is true skoOl. . Vintage rules .
A beautiful thing to ride.. -
Two Simons!!!
-
First thing i noticed wad a different attack style on the 2nd bike. Hmmmmm

😎

The gear only enhances the rider, if you are strong enough retro bikes are still a great option. My univega and i regularly blow past fancy carbon bikes. While the sip coffee I'm still riding, getting stronger.

Retro bikes are more beautiful. And you can find them in much cheaper prices. I have a 30 year old Velosolex bike and I bought it for a tenth of the price of a new one. It's really fast, but going up a hill seems impossible.... Gonna change the gear system
-
It seems to me as the rider did not put the same effort on the vintage bike as he did on the modern bike....that's just a visual observation $$
-
wow.how did you get that bike
-
Are you trying to pull the wool over my eyes? at 0:59 we see Delgado riding a bike with Campag Super Record, not Winmann brakes. Also those Simplex gears you show are entry level components, so should be compared to a modern "Tiagra" spec not Dura Ace. Looks like it also was shod with el-cheapo wheels... which is why you broke them....not saying retro is better than new, but at least make the test fair... stopped watching after i saw that, since the result will be BS

Friction shifters are a beautiful thing.
I have two road bikes now, one brand-new with Shimano 105 5800 (11-speed) and another with a mix of a 1993 Shimano 300EX front derailleur, modern Tiagra 50t/Vuelta 38t chainrings, and 1993 Shimano Exage downtube friction shifters (this is an 8-speed system). Both have brand-new Jagwire cables, too.
Shifting up into the big ring, and shifting in general, is faster and more positive with the friction shifters. When you set your front derailleur's upper limit stop properly, you can pull fast and firmly on the lever and pull the chain up immediately and smoothly. With the STI shifters, you have to ratchet the lever before the chain moves; this is a less direct action than pulling cable using a friction shifter.
Though if you count the time saved by not moving your hands off the brake hoods to shift, the STI levers are definitely faster.
I dunno. I like both systems. Friction has such a delightful mechanical simplicity and immediacy, and once you get the hang of it you can shift very quickly and smoothly indeed. It also allows huge sweeping shifts between more than 3 gears. STI is fast and convenient and, truthfully, safer. -
That's great editing

Simon, a 30 year old Michelin in the front and no toe clips and straps?
Slap some Campagnolo on that baby and test again : l -
I have an old set of toe clips. Take them - please and first time on tube shifters? It was only when I got my CX bike that I found out they'd gone. I grew up with them. You get used to it but it takes practice. I wouldn't be surprised if the old tyres robbed confidence of the down hill. So:- missing toe clips, the wrong wheel, unfamiliar shifters, unfamiliar geometry, old tyre, old brake pads too? How could anyone get the beat out of that bike? Some split time comparisons would have been good. Props for trying. You can't keep on saying that everything it better all the time or you'd go mad.
-
11% improvement with all the modern bells and whistles, that´s .... a surprisingly small difference (some would say pathetic!)!
-
Toe clips? Who asked for the crap noise?
-
retro bikes are faster and more elegant
-
The secret place is Getaria on Baque Country ;)
-
not since 2006 has a bike gotten "faster"... new bikes are no "faster" than a 2004 scott cr1... froome would kick your ass on a steel bike.
