How Much Faster Can You Stop With Disc Brakes?
bicycles reviews | bicycles videos | bicycles online
Disc brakes have begun to make an appearance in the pro peloton, so we think it's safe to say that they're here to stay. But, how much faster can you stop with discs? And, is that the only advantage? Click here to subscribe to GCN: http://gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN Do you use disc brakes? If not, are you thinking of getting them anytime soon? The braking benefits of discs have been shown in pretty much every other wheeled sport, so, if anything, it's a surprise that they've taken this long to get traction in road cycling. With fewer and fewer reasons left not to be thinking about upgrading to discs, we wanted to see the actual performance differences between discs and top-of-the range rim brakes and wheels out on the road over various different surfaces and in different conditions. Do they have the same "Grip Strength" Who bangs the bishop more !!!!!

I believe most people in Europe buy disk brakes because they do not know or do not care about adjusting a rim brake properly. But then, disk brakes need significant lesser hand force and the next time in an emergency braking situation many will lock up the front which results in bad accidents. I do know a couple of these guys. After trying I know I will as well ill lock up a disk brake immediately.
Note, I am not speaking about the braking proficiency of professionals, or very well trained enthusiast riders. -
No way. If I press my cheap v-brake firmly, just launch the rear wheel up, wet or dry.
-
The main place they make a difference are when you are riding in mud or snow. If your rim brakes get dirty they will fail.
-
You should have tried it without locking up the tires
-
THEY ARE PLAYING JAWS OMG!!!!
-
Test is inaccurate, the rider on disk brakes consistently leaned back during braking while rim brake did not. Weight transfer is also a well factor.
-
You've got more than enough power to skid with either of them, so the one that delivers more consistency is going to yield more usable braking power. I thought it was common sense that discs were better, I guess not though.

Come do some downhill racing and tell me rim brakes are just as good and disc brakes.
-
The real advantage of disc brakes is, they are much easier to adjust.
-
You should have also swapped bikes and done the same test again. Possibly have standard wheels also would be interesting using middle of the range bikes with disc and rim.
Great video otherwise. -
this result is inconclusive, you kept locking the rim brake. locking the rim brake turns to skidding which means no conclusive results

How does the new shape of the shifters feel? It looks so big but i don't know if it's comfortable or not. (Sram hydro models) Thanks!

As a noob coming from two seater sports cars and Nissan Skylines, I had to have hydraulic disc brakes.
I can't imagine that the feel of mechanical brakes would be anywhere near as good or consistent.
Now I'm saving for a Di2 bike so the consistency extends to the gear changes... hopefully it'll mean I have my perfect bike. -
Is Dan lost? We thought he was home. She does not talk back unless you get really reckless with her, She will keep you warm even sweatin if you ride her tough and long enough, and.. even then she does not talk back unless you neglect her.

not sure if this test accurate i think if you lock the brakes on and test how much torque is required to turn the wheel maybe this will be a controlled test?

road racers, stop being pussies and use disc brakes

These test results are counter-intuitive. There are two friction surfaces to consider. (1) brake pads against rim (or disk). (2) tyres on tarmac. These friction forces need to be roughly equal for optimum braking. In wet/damp conditions any decent rim brake will be more than powerful enough to get the wheels skidding - once this starts to happen, then it makes no difference at all how "good" your brakes are. So in wet conditions, I would expect that rim and disc brakes become equally (in)effective. i.e. any benefits should reduce, not increase.

once again, to those saying that forces on the spokes are so much more on disk brakes, please think again, most of those forces come from the mass (the rider) being slowed down. so on a general magnitude order point of view, which is what physics is all about, forces on the spokes are "ballpark" the same.

Roadies are only now beginning to realise what mountain bikers have known for nearly 20yrs, don't worry, we'll explain as we go and talk you through it😉
