How to Change a Freewheel/Cassette on a Bicycle
bicycles reviews | bicycles videos | bicycles online
This is a quick tutorial outlining how to remove and replace a freewheel cassette on a bicycle. I have included lots of little tips and tricks I have picked up from performing this task several times over the years. If you replace your freewheel/cassette, you should also replace your chain: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qzchwI9SVs I hope you find this video helpful. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks, that helped out a lot.

Thanks - exactly the problem on my boy's bike - now I know it has to go in to a professional service centre - I don't have these tools!!

All we need to know, covered.

Do you only need a chain whip for cassettes or is it merely a luxury?
-
If you remove a cassette and replace with a single speed freewheel will that mess up chainline?
-
Thanks, I liked the bonus information on how the freewheel actually worked.

its really helpful..thanks for it

i just reassemble my freewheel today.. and i dont have that kind of special tool.. i just remove the ring with 2 small holes.. .. man, those bearings are really small made them stick to the grease like it was a glue, lol.. if you have a time and kinda short on money you can reassemble those, but if you have extra cash just replace it just like in this video.. great tutorial btw..

Thanks for the excellent video.
My tool does not fit, so I just looked at the inside of my wheel and it says '' proxy made in china '' I don' t see any numbers though..
Does any one know what freewheel remover tool I need?
Thanks -
The levers inside the freewheel you referred to are pawls. You should mention a chainwhip. Also it's a freewheel not a freewheel cassatte. A cassatte is completely different.

Very well. Done. Thanks

Thanks a lot. One my finger is almost broken, but I feel happy. Try gloves (e.g., hyflex foam) for working - your skin is valuable.

tried taking mine off tonight with the longest wrench I could find, haven't ever taken off cassette since I bought the bike 3 years ago, I usually pedal on a heavy gear, held the wheel down as much as I could and pressed with all my might, warped the wheel badly and snapped 5 spokes... :( going to buy new wheel tomorrow

Man I broke a spoke trying to remove the freewheel (still didn't get it off) lol
