How To Change Your Gear Ratios

Here are a few points to consider before you change your cassette and chainrings. Click here to subscribe to GCN: http://gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN With the advent of 11-speed, cassettes can be as wide-ranging as 11-32 or even 36. However, you need to look at your current setup to make sure your rear derailleur can accommodate such large sprockets. Similarly, fitting a compact or even a triple chainset for steep climbs can be done easily if you make the right equipment choices. This video will show you exactly what to look out for. hi gcn. I have an old cube with a shimano 105 9s groupset. just started out cycling and changed my cassette to 11-32 and I believe the 32 kog is rubbing on the jockey wheels. I do have a long cage and adjusted the B screw and even changed the screw to a longer one but it still rubs. what else can I do? also running standard chainset

I am thinking of swaping smallest back sprocket to medium size sprocket of front on mtb for more torque :/

Dear Sir
i humbly bow to your knowledge excellence ..i am riding a trek x caliber 7 mtb 29 inch , mostly uphill dirt track vey steep climbs my Son age 10 rides a Trek 4300 series 26 inches we are very new to biking i have purchased the 4300 trek second hand ..its kind of difficult, very strenuous to do climbs ..i do not understand these technical detail..i would like you to advise if i can change the cassette on TREK 4300(its looks old too) pl also advise and for the trek xcalaber 7 (though it is new)
thank you +919412087444 on whats app . -
if i change from a 53/39 to a 53/42, do i need to get a new chain?
-
God's teeth. That T-Shirt man.
-
if you get a roadlink you can get any cassette you want for 11 speed up to 40, many people are using this in Chiang Mai where there are lots of super steep climbs
-
I always get a new chain when I swap gears. 9 out of 10 times they're both worn in together and won't mesh well with a new component.
-
I've got a triple up front (50-39-30), and a 9 speed 11-30 on the back. I can climb up anything with that! The rear is a bit gappy though, but hey, that's the cost of being able to climb up anything.

I have a cheap mountain bike, but can't afford an expensive one, would I be able to go from a 7 cog free wheel to a 11 cog cassette in the rear with it still being able to fit inside of the frame?
-
I have a muscular and thus heavy physique for cycling. So I am looking for easier gearing as I love climbs, however bad I may be at it. This video made me realize I have the same snob attitude about triple rings as many do about 11-32 and higher rear cassettes. Weird.
I got a 11-34 Shimano Tiagra HG500 10 Speed Road Cassette + 4700 10 Speed Rear Mech medium cage. It was supposed to fit but nope. Some say it could be that my bike FRAME itself couldn't handle it, a Cervélo R3 2013. I've seen many posts about it online. Others say it could be my shifters that are not compatible with this new pull ratio. Why is it so complicated??? -
I run 52x36 with an Ultegra short cage rear mech. Handles a 32 tooth rear cog just fine.
-
That was a lot of info - thanks. You lost me early Simon, but still enjoyed listening....pretending like I could possibly tinker around with any mechanical thing more complicated and changing the height of my saddle. :)

So is the largest rear sprocket you can get (road) 32 teeth?
My largest sprocket currently has 30 teeth (8 speed claris) but I find myself grinding on steeper hills when I much prefer spinning in the saddle.
Can anyone tell me how big a difference there is between 30 and 32 teeth sprockets?
Or would you recommend getting a larger mountain bike set up going to 34 or more -
It's also a good idea to put on a new chain when replacing the cassette or installing new rings. A worn chain will quickly wear out new components.
-
in a ciclocross bike ,im used 46/38 chain rings ,and wan to replace for 52,whats the rear derailleur for 52/38 chain rings and 12/27 cassette,? i have short cage
-
Can I use a 52 34 or is that to much of a spread.
-
some SRM power meter has a 110/130 BCD win win
-
Quick lame three-in-one question: I've got FSA Gossamer 52/36 in the front with BCD of 110mm. I want to change the large chainring for 50 (weak, want to use more of my cassette). Am I correct in my understanding that any chainring with 110mm BCD will fit? Can I keep the 36 chainring, or do I have to get one with 34/something else? Will the front derailleur (Shimano 105 5800) be able to handle the changes?
Thanks! -
If someone snobs at your triple chainring, mention something like a BOB trailer full of masonry supplies and grin.
