How To Check Your Bike For Damage After A Crash
bicycles reviews | bicycles videos | bicycles online
Your bike's frame can take a bit of a battering if you've been unfortunate enough to crash. Here's how to check it and the rest of your bike for damage. Follow GCN on YouTube: http://gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN We start by checking our wheels, shifters, bars, stem, seat and gears to see if they're broken or bent - while not part of the frame, they're obviously very important to the continued running of your bike. When checking the frame of a bike for damage we work through methodically from the front of the bike to the back, looking at a few key areas to check for any damage. About GCN: The Global Cycling Network puts you in the centre of the action: from the iconic summit of the Stelvio to the epic trails of Fort William, Scotland, everywhere there is pavé or dirt, world-class racing, and pro riders, we will be there bringing you all the action, essential analysis and unparalleled access every week, every month, and every year. I crashed in September of this year. Crossed over some railroad tracks at the wrong angle and the tracks grabbed my front tire and took me down. Checked my bike and went to get on it and ride away but as soon as I put any pressure on my handlebars my hand hurt too much for just a crash. Knew something was wrong. I had broken my hand. Very important to check yourself as well as your bike

crash on way home form a tt broke my hand in 4 places

Thanks. Quality videos as always. I had my first serious crash (i.e. need to go to hospital, not home, after going over the handlebars at 30kph and onto my face) this past weekend, and was hoping you guys would have some good advice on assessing both my confidence to return and my bike's condition. Helpful videos on both counts, thanks guys. What I'd really like to do is play the long game as much as necessary, but ultimately do the whole ride I'd planned that day. Is that an effective way to shake the monkey off, or just stubbornly asking for trouble, what do you reckon? Obviously I wouldn't try to complete it at any particular speed. Just ride the route, enjoy it, and get home without hitting the road and riding in an ambulance!

I actually rode a bike for several years after a crash that made the front fork slightly less bent, and shortened the whole frame about 1 cm shorter. Of course it was a steel frame, but I still have a feeling that I might hav been rather lucky. :) The tubes had no cracks though, but they were visibly compressed at a few places.

Just crash an hour ago, my chain somehow jammed at 35km/hr. My 3T Carbon bar is cracked ;( Shifters are scratched. My S Works saddle is scrapped ;( very unlucky for me

lol about an hour ago i just crashed. am much more worried about my bike than me. I was able to ride home but my frame may be dead.Don't go doing Criterium training in the rain with a cross wind : )

I crashed pretty hard today, going about 25, just lost control while trying to stretch out a bit. I checked my fork (which is carbon) and noticed a little groove, i can't tell if its just a deep scratch or a crack. Any way to tell?

This whole video I was wondering why you are wearing a helmet

Awesome! Can't wait to crash!

I have a small to medium sized dent on my CAAD10 top tube, which was from the handlebar smashing into the side of the top tube in a crash. No cracks, but having seen stress put on an aluminium coke can with a small dent, it seems to deform much easier. Would it still pose a threat?

brilliant coverage. had a crash yesterday. will still take her to a bike shop but allows me to still do the basic checks. many thanks.

Has Si got the World champ stripes on his rear stays in this video? Naughty!

Guys. I really have to tell you this. Ut is probably the most hilarious crash I've ever had. so I was riding on a flat, smooth and empty road, getting ready to turn a very wide corner (like really wide). No cars, no pedastrians, just me in front of the corner. I was going like 30 kph turning into the corner. And for some reason, I did not check where the sidewalk begins, I probably thought, I had enogh space either. So as I'm im turning I'm watching the street up ahead me. 2 seconds before the crash, i actually saw, that I was about to hit the sidewalk, which was very high on that road. And this weird "I can't turn my bike eventhough I have full control"- feeling hits me, than I hit the sidewalk. And for some reason I stayed on my bike for so long, probably from 30-5 kph, wiggling on my bike trying to get the control back. I failed and fell with 5 km/h. I quickly turned around to see if anyone had noticed it. Luckily noone was there, he would've probably laughed his ass off.

And don't forget to keep an eye on your rear mech hanger after a crash. I've had 2 fail on me during the past 12 months and on each occasion I'd had a minor fall in the days running up to the hanger failing. It's an amazing little thing the hanger....the only part on a bike which is deliberately made out of shitty, low grade alloy. But thank god for it. It's far cheaper replacing a derailleur and a hanger than an entire frame.

My derailleur went into my spokes once I ended up flying over the handle bars and breaking my chin ....

Had a big crash going down a gravel trail today when a stick jammed in my rear wheel around a corner. Somehow BOTH of my shifters got knocked inward. I'm really confused. Great vid though I will go over these points.

So useful just had by first crash and was worried if the bike was safe to ride and how to fix a bent shifter

thanks guys

How about checking the QRs? I had a small, really quite insignificant tumble couple weeks ago on a mountain bike and didn't check the QRs. In the next uphill (thankfully and not down) the back wheel falls off.. Turns out the QR took a hit in the tumble and got knocked loose and the wheel fell off when I was putting proper power on the pedals. Then last week my mate had a fairly nasty crash during a road ride and I checked his bike while he was recovering (luckily came off only with some road rash and a broken helmet..) ; again, the back wheel QR was very loose (though it didn't come off this time). Might've been loose to begin with or might've been knocked in the crash. Either way, I now check my QRs every time the bike goes horizontal, just in case!
