Price? Aerodynamics? Style? Dan helps you find the perfect helmet in this video. Click here to subscribe to GCN: http://gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN If you do choose to wear a helmet, there are a lot of options out there. The most important factor is comfort - you will be wearing this thing hopefully every time you ride your bike, so making sure it fits is paramount. After that, try and work out what suits you in terms of price point, the amount of ventilation it offers, even weight and aerodynamics - this becomes more of a consideration on higher end helmets. An important point to mention is that all reputably sold helmets will have passed safety checks, so a more expensive helmet won't mean greater safety. Sorry, but in the 80's-90's, if you wore a bicycle helmet, you were a fag. period. end of story. no redemption. and I think that still stands today. It was an open invitation to be bullied, and rightly so. 'What's wrong wuss? mommy didnt teach you to ride a bike, pussy?' ..'fag'..

If I replaced my helmet every time I crash my parents wouldn't have any money left.

I just bought my first helmet after nearly 40 year of cycling. $10, second hand, but it's the same color as my bike. Isn't that too gay ?

What are your thoughts on MTB helmets with Visor's are they safe?
-
Can a bike helmet be used for skateboarding? I happen to much prefer the look of bike helmets instead of the skateboard "bowl" shaped helmets, but I can't find any skateboarder helmets that look like bike helmets?
-
Question to ponder do helmets give you a false sense of security - if you come off your bike on tarmac at 50kph would you have been safer if you came off your bike at 20 kph without a helmet ...

how i bought my first helmet i saw it
bought it easy as -
Mine was manufactured by Corsa from china. It's around $30. Since its a chinese manufacturer, im really doubtful if it would be really worth it and safe (no offense) because the interior looks odd like its only made up of styrofoam not knowing that all bike helmets are really made out of those. LOL

GCN, somehow you forgot to include the #1 consideration in this video: safety. As user mattelliottmusic points out, wearing a helmet may not be safer than not wearing one. Also, it's not like every skull injury is life threatening. Yes, injuries to the head can be fatal, but I have not seen relevant cyclist studies which state a certain percentage of them are. Only super generalised info.
Also, some scientific studies suggest that a sudden rotation in the neck can make the rest of one's life a lot more miserable. Maybe that should be taken into account as well when choosing a helmet? I would certainly suggest it in a video. So MIPS would certainly be something I would like to be included in my choice of helmet.
Finally, what about multi-sports? Those who like to cycle, climb (mountaineering, rock) and/or kayak might get away with just the Kong Scarab. (Yes, there aren't any other helmets I'm aware of with this combination). For those who prefer skiing instead of kayaking, the Cebe Trilogy offers protection for cycling, skiing and climbing (mountaineering, rock).
So there you have some more characteristics to choose from: safety and usefulness. -
How frequently should you replace your helmet? I've read after its 5 years old, but that seems to often?

What are your feelings on MIPS helmets?
You are so right about trying on helmets in the shop rather than ordering online. I have learned that a universal sized helmet isn't unless you have a universal sized head. I have a large head so I need to have one that is either large or extra-large. I wear a hat size of 7⅝ to 7⅞ (US hat size).
I like having a helmet with a visor. I find that It helps with avoiding sun in my eyes. I also attach rear-view mirrors to my visor. I use the ones that are made to attach to glasses bows. I use duct-tape to keep them from falling off. -
Nice shoes Dan.
What are they? -
Did you know that in America, the same $600 helmet from the local bike boutique has to meet the same standards as the $19.99 department store version?
-
I've found cycle helmets are of little use in an accident as your chin nearly always takes the main impact.
