How To Ride In A Group | Ridesmart

Ridesmart is a series in partnership with British Cycling aimed at Sportive riders. Riding as part of a group is more sociable and can save you energy during a long event. Click here to subscribe to GCN: http://gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN The performance advantage to riding in a group is that several people can share the responsibility of setting a manageable pace as well as sheltering their riding mates from the wind - a technique known as 'drafting.' The most efficient formation for a large group is to ride side-by-side in pairs, with riders gradually rotating and sharing their turn on the front. How long your turn is depends a lot on weather conditions and how strong you feel, but 5 minutes is a good starting point. Riding in close proximity to other riders does carry it's hazards though, so be sure to give enough space to maneuver, don't overlap the wheel in front and be sure to keep good communication with your riding companions. I'm a cyclist of 20 years, but insisting on riding in rows of 2 on busy roads is SO antisocial towards other road users. It does not make you safer (I have never had an accident single row), in fact I would argue it increases risk as it annoys drivers who then try and wildly pass the group when there is a gap in oncoming traffic.

I ride with a recreational group with a no drop policy. Since joining I've been able to maintain speed wit them, but I find them to be too serious. They don't seem to relax and just enjoy it. They just pump, pump, pump, and pump. This can be very intimidating to new riders, especially women. There are hardly any. Because of where we ride, in the countryside, there is nowhere to properly rest and relax. There's no washroom for women, men just go behind a tree. No snack bar. No gas station. No park bench. This is a popular group, but riders have left because without proper rest, there's no social aspect to this sport. What to do?

I was watching other gcn videos on volume 38, then I needed to bump it up to 68

just one more thing I'd like to add Matt, when drafting towards a side wind, never Never "half" thr back wheel from the guy in front of you, bcz if he needs to abruptly dodge a porthole or anything your wheels will touch and probably you'll end up kissing the road
-
Matt is clearly half wheeling during the intro. Well done Matt, time to attack!

Why is this video so quiet?
-
@GlobalCyclingNetwork - How would you suggest riding when in a group of three? I'm not trying to half wheel on purpose but it can get awfully lonely at the back :(
-
Nice vid as always, but is car up or car down for a car ahead?
-
You need to say something about approaching roundabouts. You may need to slow or stop and wait for a gap even if the people in front risk going across. When you are in the middle of the group the worry is you don't want to get hit from behind by your comrades.

Going to give the link to this video to the next lunatic non cycist who cuts me up shouting "pay some road tax!"

Tyler Hamilton says that the beginning of his breakdown in his relationship with Lance Armstrong was when the latter started half wheeling him.
-
Your right I just starting replaying the video and the volume seems to be back to normal.

+lee a dorney. your right people with cars think that because they are paying car insurance that they have the right to want to kill you. It's happened to too many people that I know. You can be following all the rules of the road and they will still want to hit you. The laws have got to be changed in such a way that it protects cyclilst. As it stands right now they don't give a crap about us. Riding outside is a gamble one that you do with your life on the line.

Serious question. When riffing double abreast how is that not half wheeling? Is it because you are completely parallel as apposed to my front wheel overlapping the Rider in front? I know I'm begins majorly critical but there are plenty of parts in the video where the riders are spinning side by side but not half wheeling. Is a half wheel onky a half wheel when a rider is drafting off the back of the rider in front slightly to the side yet wheels overlap. And ridding double abreast even though you can be half wheeling at the same time is OK.

That adidas kit looks shit. Thanks for wearing so now I won't buy.

I want to know if a few million people watched the TDF in Yorks in 2013 - why do i always meet people in motor vehicles who want to kill me ?
-
First ride in a local group, I get to the front and the leader starts halfwheeling. I guess that was a test ;)
