can you do this with both decompression cables snapped?

about 1979-1980 i think, i to remember as you? the DR became there 4 stoke dirt bike

What I have found to be easier is that once you find that the piston is in or approaching compression stroke, i.e. the hardest point to kick, put the bike in first gear and roll it backwards until compression prevents it from rolling any further. If you give it a hard enough kick, it should fire right up.
Not sure if this is bike specific, but for my 1992 DR650, this works every time. Even giving it my all, I am unable to kick start this bike without some compression release. Now, I am not even considering replacing the decompression lever that broke off during a ride. -
What kind of shoes are those?

Very good explanation, I have a 1982 XR500 however the automatic de-compression release is not engaging. I had a heck of a time trying to kick start the old girl until I viewed your video, thank you.

i had one of these sp500's. i absolutely loved it!!!!!!

That is the ONLY '82 SP500 I have seen, since I had mine back in the late '90's. It is great to see one again! I never should have sold mine; I bought it used in '85 and took to Colorado ever summer to ride 4x4 roads with. Great trail bike. Not too tall, great torque, and easy to deal with in general. Good on the road, too, being a 500.

Is this an early 1980s model? I'm 47 and it seems like I remember some guy older than me having one of these when I was a teenager near where I grew up......guy went near the length of the neighborhood pulling a big wheel stand on the thing.

Very nice explanation :))) thanks

how fast does this bike go? mpg?
-
I watched your video - started up my bike for the first time, rode to the gas station. Turned it off and then spent a good 20+ minutes trying to kick start it again. You make this look so easy.
-
is this possible on an electric start?

Good tips, I found with my XR500, it doesn't have enough kickstarter stroke to go from the top of one comp. stroke through the next one, so I start from the bottom of the power stroke, the easiest way to get there if you don't have decomp is to have the bike in gear and roll it back until it stops, put it in neutral and kick it from there, I found that is enough for most bikes. I can reliable start my 500 barefoot.. with vids to prove it

Nice sound and kickstarting technique lesson. How about tips for starting bigger thumpers like DR600s - bet you would need big biker boots for them, especially when hot!
-
Yeah....I kinda feel stupid for not realizing the simple aspects of this because I do this all the time without even thinking of it. The light bulb just lit up when I saw it! Ha!

Interesting! Didn't know anything about this until you posted this video. Thanks for sharing!
