Unbelievable. After all that and she never taught you how to just float on your back! People float... And it doesn't expend ANY energy. Your lungs can fill with air and your body has fat in it. Take a deep breath and try to touch the bottom of a 12 ft deep end. Can you stay down there? Not without dive weights. You float back up unless you breathe out all the air in your lungs. To float on your back just lean back in the water, extend your arms out to each side to stabilize, and let your legs relax and extend like you are in a water bed. Now breathe normally - but never completely exhale. Always keep your lungs about 1/3 or 1/4 full of air. That's it. You can stay like that for hours if need be. I know - I can almost go to sleep like that. My longest tread time floating on my back is about 40 minutes. And it feels good! Everything else she said is good knowledge. But if you have to tread water longer than an hour (MUCH less if you are out of shape) - her methods alone will wear you out and you will panic and drown. Learn to float on your back!

I feel like this is the most relaxing thing you can do in the pool, this is so soothing! And quite intuitive

This is so incredibly frustrating, because I do exactly what she says, but I still sink like a rock.

I've never understood why there is such a thing as treading water. I was taught it in swim school, but after learning how to float on my back, I couldn't see the point of it. Treading water does not require a large expenditure of energy, but floating requires none, or very, very little. However, better than simply floating is what is called the Elementary backstroke. With this easiest of all strokes, I think I could swim continuously from day-break to sunset without exhausting myself. I've never done it, but it's so easy and effortless that I think I could. I've even considered swimming the English channel with it, but that is probably too great a stretch. The water there is too rough and too cold. Anyway, take the few seconds it takes to learn the elementary backstroke, and you'll never again bother with treading water.
