Motorcycle Q&A: How to lane splitting or whiteline "safely"! Bike: Kawasaki ZX6R

Please watch: "NEW BMW M2 Coupe & REVVING at 2016 Detroit Auto Show" ➨ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyT0HYtDfu4 -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Some lane splitting tips on how lane share safely on your motorcycle. Bike is Kawasaki ZX6R. Response to Drive's "How and Why Motorcycle Lane Splitting is Safe and Good - RideApart". I don't recommend lane splitting, but it is certainly very convenient and makes a lot of sense in theory. Most important thing is to avoid splitting unmatched cars. So if one car could look to his side and THINK it's safe to lane change, then you should avoid passing or risk and accident. When cars are lined up, they generally won't cut you off, because they see the other car there. The Drive video I'm responding to features Jamie Robinson, Nik Wogen, Wes Siler and Harlan Flagg. They also feature the Zero S, Suzuki GSX-R600, Triumph Street Triple, Triumph, Suzuki, Zero. They refer to lane splitting also as filtering __________________________________________________ Facebook - Carlyle's Picks http://www.facebook.com/pages/Carlyles-Picks/177951058887498 Twitter - https://twitter.com/carlylespicks __________________________________________________ 10:07:14:08:56.21828 259^ 37v 191c Tango update with 14 items

1. Be visible! When you are waving from line to line, you are often hidden behind the cars.
2. When you are visible drivers are making (in most cases) more space for you. Use hi-vis vest, jacket, helmet etc.
3. If you are not sure, wait.
4. In a moving traffic try to ride close to the markings. Drivers can see you in the mirrors and you can have all the time some free space in front of the bike. -
I've been riding for over 50 years, with zero accidents. If I had ridden like you are, I wouldn't have lasted 5 years. Since we all know that many car drivers are completely oblivious to what's happening around them, why would I want to constantly put my life in their incompetent hands like this?
-
Constantly swerving to the right and left while lanesplitting will make drivers think you are drunk.
-
Great video; this should help new riders realise how much they need to think about the traffic around them. It's so easy to just focus on the car in front. In Queensland, Australia they have a progressive bike riding licence system and it's only legal for full licence holders to lane split (riders with at least 1-2 years experience).

thanks man I'm new to all this!!!

Audio was great. What were you using?

This isn't filtering... This is dangerous overtaking. Filtering takes place in traffic at low-speeds. Hence, why there's a grey-area in the law, and many police officers will fine you for `dangerous overtaking` if you're doing what you're doing in this video.
Filtering usually takes place up to 40 MPH, then it's considered `illegal`, to an extent. If you want to know what filtering `really` is, watch Royal Jordanian. He filters smoothly and safely in low-speed traffic. You're riding very dangerously in this video, but hey, you're in LA and the majority of riders out there are squids and Valentino Rossi's... -
Thanks for posting this! I've been riding for 2yrs, but not getting much road time. I ride freeways now and I'm looking to get more comfortable splitting lanes. Seeing it from the rider view along with your commentary really provided a lot of information! Thank you!

Lane-splitting is 100% legal in California.
-
This video is AWESOME! You ride exactly how I ride... I factor soooo much when splitting lanes with my 2015 Yamaha R1....
-
Dude this is the best, most advisable, and entertaining lane passing video I've ever seen. You changed my way of thinking bro. Subscribed!!!

One of the first california motovloggers that doesn't sound like an idiot. Good training video-saying your stream of thought as you make decisions in traffic.

nice

This guy is a rookie, I would have been gone already!

Nice video I certainly picked up a few tips :)
-
Why shouldn't you pass on the right? I was never made aware of this.

I finished the video. I am no expert, so I don't have specific constructive criticism. I will point out some positives:
1. Great to see the hand signals, when not splitting lanes.
2. Talking and splitting lanes is difficult, because:
1. Much to talk about
2. Much to watch for to protect your own safety.
My own observation:
1. You chose to move right and left more, rather than simply staying near the white line. My guess is you feel more visible and may be trying to avoid blind spots.
There is more to the conversation on splitting lanes. You have done a great service here both as a model for trying to do it safely and in pointing out your own mistakes.
I am not technologically inclined, but if I were I would like to take this video or one like it and put my own commentary on it, as to what I see as a viewer.
I might even like commentary from a view from the air, but from the air you can't see things you can see from the road.
I think it would be good to follow a law enforcement motorcycle as they split lanes and actually I would like it if a motorcycle cop made a video with commentary of splitting lanes.
I admire your fun attitude. Personally I would not be, I take this seriously. I may be a clown, but on the bike on the road, all laughs are off from me. This is not a criticism, and you even suggested you were being an idiot dancing to the music.
I also try to remember I am representing other motorcyclists when I am out their, ideally I would have high visibility clothing and helmet at all times. Yes I have broken a lot of rules on purpose, and sometimes by accident, but the main thing is safety and the other thing is reputation for motorcycle riders.
This only my second lane splitting tips video to watch, if you have other ones you know of and like maybe as much or more than your please feel free to let me know.
This goes for other viewers reading this post as well.
Thanks again for a great job. -
I have not watched the whole video yet, but I have to say great job, or better than what I have seen so far. Your commentary seems fine. If there is a way for you to add commentary after you are not riding, but still by talking that may be good too, in case you have more to add.
Another great thing are the boxes describing and almost pointing out literally different areas you are analyzing. Thanks so much, I will probably be commenting more on this one. I hope to see more training films like this on white lining. In fact I would not mind as many areas of a city covered as possible. Not suggesting this to you, it is way too much work.
I am pro white lining for myself and those that can, but I am still undecided as to whether it is more dangerous or not. I have posted some comments at the video titled how motorcycle white lining is safe and good,
At the comments of the mentioned video Eric wsmith has been very logical and critical in stating that there is no proof showing that it is safer to split lanes.
I certainly don't fault you for saying it is more dangerous. I am simply undecided, it may be more complex than a simple statement suggests. -
I'm thinking, this guy needs to care about proper gearing
-
Great video at least you gave insight on how to act and think safetly when lansplitting!
