This was my first real snowy bicycle commute to work. 2 inches to 3 inches of snow in parts of the road. I did not fall down. Yay! The beginning of my winter commute was the worse because the snow plows hadn't really hit the streets yet, but as I progressed the streets were cleared very well at the end of my bike commute. I outfitted my bicycle with 35mm studded tires the night before in anticipation of the snow and ice today. Hopefully the streets will be cleared better tonight, but there will probably be more ice as the sun goes down - that is the reason I have studded tires anyway though. There are two schools of thought on how to ride a bike through snow. Some people say skinnier tires help you cut through and others say fatter tires help you float on top of the snow. Based on this ride I would say having wider tires would have probably helped a little in the less plowed sections. I ran my tires near the max pressure at about 80 psi, but lowering them to 60 psi would have helped with my traction. Today was Presidents Day in the USA, which is a government holiday so schools and other government organizations were closed. Traffic was low on the roads, which was lucky. Thanks for watching!
