I'm 16 years old and I haven't been cycling for about 5 years.
I recently gained interest in cycling again and decided that I will buy my first road bike soon.
I'm kind of afraid of riding on the road though, because the roads where I live are very tight and crowded, and do not have a bike line.
Furthermore, I have a feeling most drivers won't take me seriously and won't be cautious of me on the road... -
And... 1) Don't get too close to motorcycles when moving at very low speed; 2) Do not jump red lights even if turning right 3) Do not overtake a car which is giving way to traffic coming from left or right 4) Be extremely careful when overtaking cars/trucks on the right (on the left in UK) 5) Watch out for pedestrians crossing stationary traffic outside zebra crossing 6) Try to ride either behind or in front of other vehicles, not beside them 7) Have a look at motorcycle safety tips which are much more in detail

Bicycle BRAAD RULES!!!
-
This video does a good job of explaining a lot of the basics of bicycle safety. But, I'm very disappointed that there is no mention of lane control, and there are several examples of the cyclists riding all the way to the right in the lane when they should have been out controlling the lane. This is a method that is taught by the League of American Bicyclists, but apparently not emphasized. It will save more lives than helmets ever will. (For the record, I do always wear a helmet) I don't know why this issue is so taboo in our society. Full lane use is legal, safer, and least stressful!

take the helmets and shove them!!

Good Tips

its called "Cycling" not "Bicycling", lol
-
its all fine except when she said obey all signs. no way. I ride out of the way of cars, i DONT push buttons that stop traffic, and i look for my break then BLAST. thats the way we do it here. by the way, never steal, its just wrong.

please don't ride bikes on any road in America. The odds are against you. Please don't ride any where near busy roads.

If you read Chaucer (before bikes existed), then cattle & sheep were driven. Otherwise these days, apart a few increasingly irrelevant Franklinites, in modern usage we use the word ride for cycling. Ride - A journey made on horseback, bicycle or motorcycle. Drive - Operate & control the direction & speed of a motor vehicle. Otherwise i share your interest in old bicycling documents, & cycling in general. Happy riding!
-
No. If you read old bicycling documents (before cars existed), they call it driving.

Actually there are many more head injuries in motor collisions than on bikes, & more pedestrians die of head injuries than cyclists. Head injuries come pretty low down on the cause of death list for cyclists; crushing injuries to the torso being the most common. Not that a cycle helmet will help much in a collision with a car, only being tested to be effective up to approximately 15 mph. If you really want to protect your head, wear one in the shower, the place where most head injuries occur.

Riding a bike is NOT like driving a car. "Driving a bike" is a perversion of the English language.

Great safety tips.

Here's another safety tip - adjust your bike to be a 'vertical recumbent' - at almost no cost. You can then much more powerfully pedal out of trouble (e.g. across wide intersections). See the video called World's cheapest safest do-it-yourself 'vertical recumbent' bicycle.

excellent movie, it is just what we want for our teaching package on Cycling Safety. If we can get the script attached here, second english language learners will benefit even more.
