Operation Freedom Grinder: Recovering a Stolen Bike with Pedal Power
bicycles reviews | bicycles videos | bicycles online
3 weeks after it was stolen, Rock The Bike crewmember Kai spotted the heavily customized Mundo cargo bike locked to a signpost in the Mission. He emailed a photo and we gave it a positive match. We asked him to please put a lock on the bike. We borrowed an angle grinder from Cyclecide's Big Daddy and made a plan to come back the next morning with a 2-bike Pedal Power system...

At the risk of sounding like an Internet troll. Hitachi 18v angle grinder!! Cheaper than the inverter used in the video. Also you could have charged it the same way you powered the grinder but at home with a beer then cut the lock and still had enough power to cut the hands off the thief who stole your bike. Just sayin..

So you put locks on it yourselves and cut the lock? Why not USE THE KEY OR COMBO THAT CAME WITH THE LOCK YOU BOUGHT!?

The bicycle powered angle grinder is some serious hipster shit but I am seriously impressed it only took two guys to power it.

Awesome!!!!!

I liked your work

Stupied thiefs Suckers Ive 3 bikes that were totaly stolen
-
They put THEIR lock on it so the thief couldnt remove it anymore and then cut the thiefs lock - now clear? :)
-
the first lock they just took off was theirs, undone with their key.. the one they cut off was the one the thief used to lock it up.
-
Um ........ They put a lock on it and came back and cut the lock off??????? Did I miss something??
-
Wait they cut their own lock ?
-
Umm... Cordless angle grinder anyone?

I know. There's a false sense of security for sure, which is why it's important for bike people to work together to help recover stolen bikes. The worst thing is that cordless angle grinders are now almost as available as cordless drills, and almost as possible as the Pedal Powered one shown here.

Too bad about the battery.

Few people were awake at that hour, but the one neighbor who stopped to check it out immediately recognized us as the rightful owners. Plus I brought photographic proof!
-
Yeah, that itself is actually pretty sobering - FYI, y'all, if your bike is locked but out of your line of sight & earshot, it could be walking away even now...
-
Impressive thing is they were obviously "stealing" a bike and apparently nobody said anything.
-
I feel NO need to communicate with whoever claimed it as their bike for the past few weeks... My front wheel was bungied to the frame and they threw a 700c front wheel on, meaning they had 1 brake on a heavy cargo bike. Not resourceful enough to even cut my lock off. Clearly a lowlife.
