Overhaul/Repair Bendix 70 Coaster Brake Hub
bicycles reviews | bicycles videos | bicycles online
I got a cruiser bike with a coaster brake hub that didn't work. The bike was free, and I thought I could fix it. In this video, I take the hub apart, clean it, lubricate it, replace the bearings and put it bake together again. Now it works great. The hub is a Bendix 70. The bike is a Ross Central Park. **If the video was useful or interesting please give it a "thumbs up" and consider subscribing. -Website: http://www.RJTheBikeGuy.com -Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RJTheBikeGuy -Subscribe Here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=shyflirt1 -YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/RJTheBikeGuy

where can I find a grease gun like yours
-
Good video but you definitely DO NOT need high temperature grease in the hub. HT grease is meant for extreme environments like the hubs of high speed vehicles that use disk brakes and must stop heavy loads quickly. And, you actualy should never mix different greases.

re kids & dept store bikes, neither do I. sometimes asked to by people i have worked on their bikes.

G'day, liked your vid. Do you know what is the purpose of the vertical up facing rear drop in at the very rear of the frame in your video?
Could you please do one on a dept store kid's bike with a no brand coaster brake? -
Thanks RJ for the overview of overruling a coaster brake. I used your video to aid me in rebuilding a SunTour rear coaster brake hub. I had great results with the rebuild, but when I put the bike on the road for a test ride, the coaster brake felt mushy and it took several feet for the bike to come to a complete stop. While in the rack, the brakes worked perfectly. Is there an adjustment I need to make to improve the stopping power of the coaster brake?

can you make a video showing how to remove a bendix or suntour coaster brake. converting it to a freewheel.

Hey Rj, I have a bike with a coaster brake also, I also got it for free. I wanted to overhaul the hub but the coaster brake clamp bolt is striped, do you have any ideas on how to get it out?

Chain is way too lose, always tighten the torque arm last.

Several years ago I decided, if I was going to claim myself as a bike mechanic, I needed to have the right tools. I bought a set of 14mm, 15mm and 16mm open/box, six sided wrenches and a set or 14mm, 15mm and 16mm deep well six sided sockets with 1/2 in drive for the specific purpose of using them on bicycle axle nuts - 15mm for standard axles, 16mm for Schwinn axles and 14mm for front axle nuts - I just feel it doesn'e look good for a real mechanic to be using an adjustable wrench - Even though I did use them for years and never had a problem with them unless they were extremely cheap wrenches

I just got into messing with my own bikes and really enjoy your videos. Great explanations and detail. Thanks and keep it up!

where I can download the manual ?

Good video. I remember that back in the 60's I had a balloon tire bike, probably made in the 50's (tags were gone) and it had a neat set of stacked plates, almost like a clutch pack, that was splined inside. Tended to overheat and then be very touchy and lockup easily with two people on bike. Most likely was using the wrong grease in those days. LOL

this video is painfully slow
-
its just slipping with all the gunk inside

This is good recycling!

This video has given me the confidence to overhaul my cruiser's coaster brake. Although I haven't read all of the comments, based on your overhaul, were you able to diagnose the root cause of the coaster brake to not function properly?
-
awesome video. I ripped apart my old sears cruiser and scrambled the parts. I was able to reassemble without a hitch after watching your video.

This video helped re-assembly of my '67 Coast King, Bendix hub. Works fine and thanks for posting!

Free bike.. Total cost bearing $12-15 and a $30 cone wrench. New wheel and coaster brake.. $40-50. I love how that coaster brake comes apart. Way more complicated then one would think. Nice overhaul!
