Parking your bike at home (Netherlands)
bicycles reviews | bicycles videos | bicycles online
There is no nation in the world where the people cycle so much as in the Netherlands. Where do the Dutch store all these bicycles? More info: http://bicycledutch.wordpress.com/2013/07/11/parking-your-bike-at-home/

I'm kind of surprised that bicycle theft even existed in the Netherlands with bicycles outnumbering the population. Who would you even sell a stolen bicycle to when just about anyone you would approach already has at least one? Plus, with bicycles being so plentiful, I'm thinking a nice used one would be affordable even to persons of very modest means, so why steal and risk the consequences of being caught.

GTman1100, Because most people live in cities. Many industrialized nations are at or over 80% of the population living in urban areas.

markenlei, the building at @2:10 does not have an "underground bike parking facility" :P I lived there (IBB - Ina Boudier-Bakkerlaan, in Utrecht), for the last year, and we DID have a bike shed behind the building, but not underground... Just saying :)

Living in Berlin, we moved to a brand new apartment block in 1979 which had been designed with cycle storage in the basement. It's sad that politicians in most countries are so slow to catch on to the benefits of the efficient personal freedom and storage of bicycles. Incredible that in 2013 and now living in Cambridge (34 years later), there are only 2 small purpose built facilities in town, always overcrowded, and no thought given whatsoever to home storage. And that's the best in the UK!!

Though I definitely understand and relate to the charm of bicycles everywhere, to the locals I guess it is quite a wonderful initiative as it must both improve bike care and theft prevention.

i loved seeing all the bikes out on the street/sidewalk when i was in amsterdam! i much prefer that to a streetscape where the bikes are all 'put away'.

Thanks Markenlei, good insight. When I was living in Eindhoven 20 years ago, we also have an in door bicycle park in an apartment building. I was pleasantly surprised when my room mate first shown me the in door bike park but later took it for granted and didn't think much about it.

Watching/drooling from California (though I'm from France)! I live in the Northern part, between San Francisco and Monterey and my little surfing town has a lot of cyclists, some are students at UCSC, some are a bit rebels/live off the grid, some just want to get around with no emission and feel human instead of being trapped in a car or worse yet a SUV of some sort... yuk... I wasn't a bike commuter back when I lived in France (moutain biker though) but caught the bug here and am hooked! Thx!

very nice!!!

A other way to park your bike: put it in your garage or barn. This video only shows how its done in cities, why not film more in the countryside.

What a fantastic video. Bravo!
-
What do you mean by "clean"? What do your streets look like then???
-
Brilliant as always :-) Wished we had building regulations like that here in Germany as well.
-
While watching your videos, I see how clean the streets are. Are the streets, let alone the villages, usually this clean around the Netherlands?

Chuckled at the PUKY brand for the children's bike.

Wish my university would follow some of these guidelines. For at least several years there have been complaints they don't provide enough covered storage at residences but they've never acted on them (only just allowed the current facilities to go into ruin or fill with abandoned bicycles). Great video!
