A novice motorcyclist was arrested early Monday after he led police on a chase from Kowloon Bay to Kowloon City, reaching speeds of more than 130km/h. Police said officers on patrol suspected the 23-year-old man of speeding in the Mong Kok-bound lane of the Kwun Tong Bypass at 11.10am. They attempted to stop the driver for inspection near Wang Kwong Road in Kowloon Bay. But, police said, the driver ignored the officer's demands to pull over and he instead started speeding north along the highway. A chase ensued and the motorcycle - with a female riding pillion - was said to have reached close to 130km/h during the pursuit. Several unmarked police vehicles also got involved during the chase. Police said the Honda motorcycle crossed the double white line into the opposite lane at Prince Edward Road East, and the driver ignored a red light when he turned onto Tin Kwong Road from Argyle Street in Kowloon City. Police eventually managed to stop the motorcyclist at the junction of Tin Kwong and Farm roads. The driver, surnamed Yau, was arrested on suspicion of speeding, dangerous driving, not displaying a probationary "P" plate - a requirement for drivers the first year after they obtain a licence - and failing to comply with restrictions on carrying passengers. He was released on bail last night and is due to report back next month. It is understood that the model of the Honda motorcycle involved is close to racing motorbikes in design and specifications, and is capable of reaching a maximum speed of 251km/h. The motorbike was sent for further inspection. The 5km distance of the pursuit would take about five minutes to complete under normal driving conditions. It took the motorcyclist only about two minutes to complete the route due to the speed he was travelling, a police spokeswoman said. The female passenger was allowed to go after she was briefly questioned by officers at the scene. In January, a 20-year-old man died after he lost control of his motorcycle and rammed into a roadside pole while travelling downhill on Sui Wo Road in Sha Tin.
