Pre Bloor Bike Lanes 2016

I drive a car and have for more than 30 years. But Toronto is already jammed with car traffic and there is no room for more roads. We need to get more people cycling or taking transit, but we need more infrastructure. Cyclists are making Toronto better-reducing gridlock, improving the environment, improving their own health and way of life, reducing health care costs and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Over 70% of Torontonians would cycle more if infrastructure were improved. Cycling volumes nearly tripled on Adelaide after protected bike lanes were installed. And motor vehicle volume flows as before. 3,350 cyclists currently ride the Bloor st stretch- can you imagine how gridlocked traffic would be if all of those cyclists switched to cars? Cars are 15 feet or so in length + 4 or 5 feet in between cars, so let's say a stopped car in traffic takes up 20 feet. 20 feet x 3,350 cyclists= 67,000 feet or 20.42 kilometres! 9 or 10 bikes fit in the space of ONE CAR…think about the space savings alone. Business associations on Bloor are behind the Bike Lane. Community support is overwhelming. Bike lanes make the road safer for all users. Build it and we will use. Most people either cycle themselves or know someone who does- loved ones, friends or family. Cyclists are making our city better. Ride Safe :)

Except that you're taking a whole lane away for a couple of cycling fags.

hey man get out of here with this practical logic.

I've been commuting on the new lane (the pilot happened! Shaw to University.) So far, I gotta say, the design is garbage. They've situated bikes on the right of the parking spots between Shaw and Spadina so cyclists are trapped between parked cars (with opening doors) and the curb which is incredibly dangerous. As well, around St. George, there is a parking inlet which the bike lane path follows (following the curb, meanwhile the inlet is designed for standing traffic like cabs.)
It's a disappointing design for something people have advocated hard for for many years. -
hey come out with a video on how bikes should have license plates so they can be accountable for not following the rules the rules of the road! Then they can pay a bike tax to use the roads and build bike lanes. I cant count on 10 thousands hands how many red lights I see bikes go through and passing cars on the right while trying to make a right! I have even seen cyclists punch cars for them being in the wrong. You guys are no angels

Many of my friends claim they would love to bike to commute with their bikes but their main concern is that it isn't safe. So I agree that more people will likely use these lanes if they are built. I personally love the set up they have around Wellesley and Queens Park for less busy areas. My main concern is what will happen to those lanes during the winter months? Will these lanes be treated and be as well maintained as the other roads?

I clicked on the 'like' button. I could of course write a comment to say I like the video. But in this case I didn't. I clicked 'like' instead. Just in case you were wondering 'Who clicked on the like button?' Well it was me. Now you know.
One thing. I sure hope they will have a Dutch road planner fly over to have a look at the place. Too often city council tries to reinvent the wheel. -
"build it and they will come" is the motto.
