Pulled over by Police for riding a bicycle in the road in Chicago Suburbs

Police Encounter does not begin until 2:00. (I just wanted to upload a lot of prior footage to show how I was riding) This video was recorded Thursday, November 19, 2015 at approximately 7 PM. I'm not entirely sure these two were actually police officers. If they were, I think they were some sort of detectives or some administrative type of police, not traffic police. He would not let me get a word out to explain that what I am doing is legal, and far safer than riding on the sidewalk. Here is Illinois law for those that want to see the letter of the law: http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/ilcs/fulltext.asp?DocName=062500050K11-1505 The section that allows me to ride down the middle of the right lane is the portion that says I am excepted from "riding as close as practicable and safe to the right-hand curb or edge" because I am riding in a "substandard width lane". Per the statue, a "substandard width lane" means a lane that is too narrow for a bicycle or motorized pedal cycle and a vehicle to travel safely side by side within the lane. I absolutely never am required to ride on dangerous sidewalks.

unmarked and not in full uniform, demand a marked unit and a supervisor. say nothing els.
NEVER show/Give ID. -
I didn't like his tone. If it were me, a written complaint would have been filed. Then I would request a copy of all complaints filed for the week to see if it actually was filed.

good job CSR. I feel like this is video shows the best way to handle being pulled over illegally:

Dude, please, next time, tell them off properly. You don't have to give them ANY identifying information if you're not doing anything illegal.

Thing is u were legally riding on street, but, is really dark outside, n the road is over 35mph speed for sure, and maybe the cops thought u didn't have enough lights to make yourself visible at night, did u have?, n the bull talk about holding traffic after, but usually they do care someone running u over at night. If u gonna ride at anytime on a street like that, then learn to be fast n keep pace, lose the cowbells is just dead weight.

Fucking dumbass doesn't know the law!

I recently had a similar "conversation" with a police sgt after filing a traffic complaint with video. He called me a few hours after I filed the complaint, lectured me about riding "in the middle of the road", told me that he was tossing my complaint in the trash, didn't let me get a word in, then he hung up on me.
Formal complaint against the sgt is pending, with references to statutes and driving manuals. -
Why call him "sir"? Bollocks to him. If you're doing something illegal, ask him to arrest you or tell him to fuckoff.
-
you should have asked for his badge number before you showed him your license.
-
Always demand a supervisor on scene.
-
His car seems to be creating a "traffic hazzard"
-
the real problem is drivers are getting worse.....not better. and because of this the cops want to make cyclists pay the price and surrender our rights to the road.
-
He didn't look like a police officer but unfortunately he sounded like the ignorant type of officer who think they can make up and enforce their own rules and don't know or care about the law. I would have asked to see his ID which would have been more to the point.
-
this is completely off topic, but where the hell does this "cowbell noise" come from?
-
Did you get a ticket? I suppose not...you did nothing illegal. I bet if you were far right he still would had pulled you over. Don't let one ahole discourage you..ride on my friend.

"Hmm, seems like this cyclist is holding up traffic, so let me stop him, and hold up traffic, while I tell him that he's holding up traffic." (Logical right?) Looks like this cop needs to go back to Rookie School. If "Law Enforcement" doesn't know what laws it's supposed to be enforcing, it kinda tells you what the general public is like. I really hope you got in touch with the agency this guy belongs to. He REALLY needs a talking to. You shouldn't have given him your Identification, legally, you don't need to.

I like the part where he tried to run you off the road.. you know.. for your safety, right?
