QUITTING DIRT BIKES? YOU'VE LOST THAT LOVING FEELING: vlog #163
bicycles reviews | bicycles videos | bicycles online
From http://www.crosstrainingenduro.com I reckon we've all felt like giving up motorbikes at some stage. Or we've had riding buddies saying should I sell my bike. I reckon Tom Cruise summed it up well when he said you've lost that loving feeling. When this happens, the typical response is to tell the guy to not quite dirt bikes as he is a skirt wearing yellow-backed pussy. I reckon this sort of response simply shows your friends aren't really putting a lot of thought into it, because there's so much more they could say if someone asks should I sell my bike, like: - you're a gutless lily livered pansy - a spineless cry baby mummy's boy - pathetic panty-waisted coward - a chicken livered pusillanimous wimp. Maybe can't afford motorbikes any more. Or you are just so good looking you can't afford to head butt a tree in top gear. Okay, quit riding and give up dirt bikes. Some motorbike riders simply can't help themselves when they jump on a dirt bike... a primitive part of their brain tells them they are James Stewart and it's full throttle everywhere. While a very small but advanced part of their brain keeps telling them they'll wind up in a wheelchair one day if they don't quit dirt riding on their dirt bike. Some riders get into a relationship where there partner says it's me or the motorbike. And when kids are involved, this can be understandable but if not then some do find the choice an easy one. The big one is when your life gets to a point that a serious injury from dirt bikes could really mess things up - things like starting a family. A job involving physical activity. Or you are simply getting old and your bones are like pretzels. These are serious issues, and the rational response is to either sell the dirt bike, or bring the risks back to an acceptable level. Easier said than done, of course. Many of us ride for the adrenalin kick. There are dirt riders who can back off the pace, or make the move to adventure riding and enjoy the scenery instead of tearing through the forest at full speed. Don't quite motorbike riding in that case. As regular viewers will know, after two sets of multiple fractures I developed a more trials based style of dirt riding... getting the thrills and challenges by tackling hard terrain at a slow speed. It doesn't eliminate the risk, but crashing in first gear most of the time means I'm far less likely to wind up in an iron lung. So I won't quit motorbikes or give up dirt riding. Dirt riding is extremely addictive, and like heroin it might kill you. But at least it doesn't leave track marks down your arm... unless your riding buddies use you for traction. All I'm saying it is fine to be a gutless lily livered pansy. Personally I've been working on this for years. And sell that dirt bike if you have to, but if you are worried about the risks, explore your options first. Look into the cross training approach. Or trials riding. Good protective gear. And of course a decent helmet. Go in peace, my children.

I started riding in the technical slow stuff and haven't left that style of riding.

I hit the mx track at MT Kembla for the first time in 23 years... After 10 laps of pinning it and clearing all the jumps I got bored and found myself in the trials course jumping logs..

+CROSS TRAINING ENDURO SKILLS airbag technology is causing a revolution in motorcycle safety today, and i hear it's getting a lot safer out on the streets because of it. Buy better safety gear, and switch to adventuring or dual sport riding. http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/helite-airbag-protection.1115160/page-2

Too funny!! Nice work. Now some of us guys will be trying sneakier methods of keeping our bikes while still keeping a lady satisfied.

Another great video. Thank you Sir. You gave me some good ideas for X-mas presents for the father inlaw. He is quitting riding bikes. Old and such. He is a big toughie type though so a box of Kleenex for when I ride past his window and wheelie. Bag of pretzels to remind him why he cant ride anymore. Last but not least diapers when he poops his shorts when that wheelie looks like its coming through the front window. Cheers from Canada. Big smiles

At 62 I can see my riding days are numbered so I plan ahead and keep in mind that I ride for fun, not to prove anything.
If it isn't fun, don't do it. I am building a dirt bike currently that is a very light fun play bike. I don't feel the need to go faster than I am comfortable with nor do I need as big an engine. Sure I still have several larger dirt bikes and will keep riding them as long as it is fun, but my new play bike is just a little old Honda XR200 with modern suspension, wheels, disc brakes and all. Light enough that I can pick it up and carry it if I need to. And slow enough that other riders are amazed that I can keep up with them.
It is my "old guy" bike that I plan to keep long after I have sold my bigger, heavier, and much faster bikes.
I think some quit riding because they are riding bikes that used to suit them well but don't anymore. Just like young/new riders do better with a fun bike that is small, light, and not powerful. I think as we age, our reactions get slow, and gravity gets a lot stronger the more years it has been pulling us down. Not to mention we get hurt a lot easier and it takes so much longer to recover.
I suggest riding a kids play bike and see if it isn't more fun than your own bike.
Small, light, and low powered can often be more fun than the latest and greatest as we get older. -
If anyone says it's to dangerous, tell them to "stop bein' a bitch"

I broke my toe one of the first times I went riding. I'm of the mentality that the limit of the throttle must be reached as soon as it can. I hit a sticky patch of mud and I went over the handle bars. Bruised basically everything and somehow broke my toe. Another riding related injury, I was a away for a week riding every day, got home and went for a ride on my push bike. Tried to use the clutch going down a hill. Not fun

thanks Barry, very timely. I've been in a wheelchair after a spinal cord injury and I'm not going back. the only chair I'm riding is a bike. but I tried trials and I don't have the strength, funny tho, it's the slow stuff that has injured me. might just have to swallow it and stick with the DRz400e. remind me to transfer some more money!!!

We are all brain-damaged. Otherwise we wouldn't ride

At the quantum scale, dirt bikes can happen to be dangerous; at the relativity scale, road bikes always are.

I'm the guy who thinks he's James Stewart every ride, now I'm trying to heal a completely shattered leg lol not to mention a cracked cylinder on my bike. once I can ride again, I'm definitely going with the slower approach

broken my back twice, first time just thought it was ribs and didnt go to the docter....t7,8,9....broken scaphoid for 10 years (while racing mx and working as a carpenter)till i got a reconstruction, its one thing to be a hardass, its another to be stupid...listen to your body, refuse to be treated like a second class citizen for your choice of recreation by the medical establishment.

The risk vs reward factor is something i think about all the time. Especially when a friend gets seriously injured. Back in august, and friend of mine went off a jump and landed on his cousin, breaking his cousins femur, wrist, and dilocating his knee. My friend broke his arm. Stuff like that makes me really question is dirt riding worth it. But then again ive only had my bike a year but damn, this has been the best year of my life. Ive met tons of good people, been to amazing places, and just had an awesome time all around.

Backing off the high-speed stuff must be difficult... see... I've never gotten out of first gear, so I measure it by tenths-of-throttle applied. One time I made it to quarter-throttle! ;D
