One of my friends who lived in Tokyo had one of those bikes set up for cross country trips. He took it passed Mt Fuji (killed his legs) then all the way down to Wakayama before he took a ferry back to Tokyo. Later when he lived in London he went through France, Germany and a couple other European countries. He really enjoys it.

@destructicon500 Well, the weight would help too. (gravity)

I don't know if I'd go as far to grant it 'Coolness'. I was a 3,000 mile biker during college and hung out with every kind of biker known to man and the consensus was that recumbants were g _ y. I really had no opinion, I am intrigued but I can't say I'd get on one in front of my friends.

Love those things! :-)

A friend of mine who rides with Velo Cape Breton has one that she uses for short jaunts around town. They're not fast, and They're not as easy to handle as a regular bike, but I've been told they're good for back problems.

I saw a lot of those bikes this past summer. I was like WTF is that?!?! But I'm not in Japan.
